Meta Tags - 2/21/2005 2:12:06
I've won a contract for an extensive (750+ page) site and am planning the order i should do things in and "what comes before what so to speak". This is the first contract i've won since beginning my business so i'm both very proud of myself and also a little unsure of myself (I know i'm bound to make some business related or "scope of work" errors).

My question is about meta tags and whether i should include the same meta tags at the top of each page within the site, or whether i should change them according to the content that's on a particular page.

The client is a community service with an existing site, there will be about 7 sub-directories within the site, each dealing with the same issue, but each with slightly different topics. So, basically, some meta tags could be the same throughout the whole site, but within each sub-directory and subsequently within each page of those sub-directories, there could be different meta tags used.

Is this going overboard? Is it usual to change the meta tags for each page within a large site like this, or do you guys just leave the same ones there across the whole site even if the content varies a bit?

Thanks

Nicole

I use them. I change them for every page where I want ranking. If I'm not interested in the page appearing in searches then I use standard site tags.

Google doesn't use them but some of the other engines do.

If there is even the remotest possibility that a search engine somewhere uses something, then I include it. :)

The only site I've spent a lot of time on, ranks
2 on Google (out of 940,000)
1 on Yahoo (out of 943,000)
6 on Alta Vista
1 on MSN search (out of 567,724)

(and No, it's not for a search term of squoerqfffjcl) :)

I concentrated on metas and content. Backlinks came later althrough I still don't have many.
