Google and Dedicated IP Addresses - 2/21/2005 18:35:08
Ok, for awhile there have been many people saying dedicated IP addresses will help page rank, while others say it makes no difference. Does anyone have any information regarding this topic? Maybe some evidence? Google doesn't list any of this information on their site, so it is kind of hard to make a decision on what people guess.

I had a few sites that were penalized recently and all were on dedicated IP's in seperate IP blocks. Until then, I have not noticed a difference in the SERPs between dedicated and shared IP. That said, I like dedicated IP addresses just in case....

I ran across this, which hopefully is correct:

quote:

5) Google and IP address.
by Anonymous Coward

Why in this day and age does google continue to penalize sites that are virtual hosted? With ip addresses becoming harder to get/justify every day why does google discount the relevance of links that don't come from a unique ip address. Please don't just deny it, I think the Internet community deserves an explanation.

Craig:

I can't just deny it? What are my other choices? :) Actually, Google handles virtually hosted domains and their links just the same as domains on unique IP addresses. If your ISP does virtual hosting correctly, you'll never see a difference between the two cases. We do see a small percentage of ISPs every month that misconfigure their virtual hosting, which might account for this persistent misperception--thanks for giving me the chance to dispel a myth!

Does linking sites from different geographic locations (IP classes) provide an SEO improvement over linking site on the same shared IP?

I am sure you have a lot of experience with this, so it would be nice to hear your thoughts. I wish there were certain facts Google could provide that explains these types of questions.

You really do not want to inter link HEAVILY on the same C class/block. I can attest it used to be an issue around 8 months ago :).

Take care,

Brian

I am not doubting you here, but do you have any facts to back that up? Because that is really what a lot of us like to see.

Opinions seem to vary on this subject, it seems like the majority are saying exactly as what you said (which sounds logical), but the same issue that I asked in my first question, still is not clear to some folks.

No paper, just personal experience, take it for what it is worth.

I was doing nice in the SERPs (read first page on scattered keywords). Site had been on page one for around seven months. I then rolled out my TLD linking to another of my tld's. I did this in the main navigation that appeared on each page. These, domains/sites, were both located on the same shared server. Within one moth I had a Google penalty. Only change I made in two months prior (other than content addition).

Take care,

Brian
