MPEG2

More commonly known as SVCD/DVD format. Compression levels vary. Works on all OS Platforms. Codecs pretty much come as standard throughout the OS Platforms. DVD Quality video/audio. Can be CBR or VBR. Main downside, is if you use the wrong compression level, the file size can be huge, and you can totally screw up the video quality.

AVI
Audio Video Interlace. Thousands of codecs can be used with this format (DivX, XviD etc). Again, downside is due to the compression level. Can be good for visual quality, same on audio. Some AVI files will require codecs to run on client machine.

If I were you, I'd go for MPEG1 (VCD format)

Codec - Compression/Decompression system files. They basically translate the info from binary to what you see on the screen
