Tad -> Google and duplicate content (2/25/2005 22:11:05)

I was recently reading an article that briefly discussed how Google can penalize a site for having duplicate content. Afterwards, I had some questions: 1.) Is duplicate content having the exactly same HTML on more than one page, or could it be having several pages that seem to target the exact same keyword phrases/search terms (or maybe both)? 2.) Can't this in some way work against your goal of having a large themed site? There is going to be some duplication. For example, a site may be structured as follows: Home Page -- outlines breadth, goal, and theme of site widgets (smooth, textured, plain, colored) 2nd level -- addresses each individual subcategory of widget. One page clearly targeting various combinations of smooth widget and other key related/popular terms. One page clearly targeting various combinations of textured widget and other key related/popular terms. etc, etc. for plain and colored 3rd level A series of pages that take the widget categories to the next level, providing highly specialized content and related info that would benefit the person interested in that type of widget. Is there any danger here? There will be duplication to a point, but I have always thought this was what Google was looking for. Tad
