Donkey -> Checking The dpi on a pdf file (2/26/2005 12:26:18)

Anyone know a way? I'm designing a leaflet that's needs to be printed on Monday, the printer (closed for the weekend) wants a 2400 dpi pdf.

I use Primopdf to create pdf files.

I can select 2400 dpi in primo's advanced settings but the final window gives you only two choices - output for screen or for print. I chose for print but I think it might over-ride the 2400 dpi setting with a lower value.

Send it to the printer and let him scream if it's wrong? [&:]

Funnily enough I've just done that.
It looks good enough to me anyway.

Just for peace of mind; if anyone knows of a way to check the dpi of a pdf file please post the answer.

You did what I would have done.

Let us know how it turns out.

I've just had a look at the help files for Adobe Acrobat 6 and they recommend that if the resolution is bigger than 1500dpi the printer should supply you with a .joboptions file.

After a quick check of one of my documents in the preflight option it looks as if the analysis can tell you the dpi of the document. I say "looks as if" because there is a lot of info there, and in my case it was errors caused by fonts not embedded. As this was a screen option job, that's no surprise.

Long time since I did press jobs.[&:]

Thanks Caz, but I don't have Acrobat so I have no idea what a preflight option is. I use PrimoPdf a free download that sets another printer on your system which prints to a PDF file. It produces good quality pdf files from any application you can print from.

It just seems strange to me that you can check the dpi of an image easily by pressing the resample button (then cancelling in your image manipulation software), but there appears to be no way to check a pdf.

It depends on the software you use to make PDF's. Free, well you get what you pay for. Pay a little and get more features. I paid $15.00 for a PDF maker and it lets me set the DPI to whatever I want.

I paid $19 for one that only lets me set up to 300dpi.
Then I paid $0 for primo pdf which also lets you set the dpi to whatever you like.

My printer has just confirmed that it meets his requirements so I was wrong in thinking that the print window overides the advanced settings.
