domain transfer how to? - 2/27/2005 14:12:24
Hello peeps!

My client has previously purchased a domain from Fasthosts. I already have a website up and running for the client, but it has a longer url so they are keen to get the original domain name moved.

What I want to know is how to do this without incurring any costs!

Fasthosts want me to pay an admin fee for a "domain release" - can I move the domain more directly? and how do I point it to the new website without getting someone else to do it - or can I?

Check out the Fasthosts control panel, some of them have domain redirect facilities. They still host it but it points to a site elsewhere.

One good reason for not using FastHosts though. Holding domains hostage is a no no.

- First off, if FastHosts plan to charge you a fee, you can tell them to shove it :)

You can transfer a domain anywhere you want, you just need to pay the transfer fee to the new domain registrar (you will receive an additional year on the domain registration when you transfer it).

When you purchased your domain through FastHosts (which is what it sounds like), you should be able to complete a DNS Change, where you change the domain name servers. Usually from NS1.Fasthost.com to NS1.NewHost.com.

"Transfer domains in or out at no cost."
- This basically says you do not pay anything to transfer a domain.

Thankyou Jaybee and Bobby! It's very confusing what can be done, because the registrars make it seem as if every move needs to be paid for, when I've always had the sneaking suspicion it doesn't need to be so painful to the wallet!!:)

I will give what you said a go and let you know of my success...

Hi,

I just transferred my website and learned there are 2 types of transfers. One is the registration of the domain name, and the other is the domain host. My registration was up on the site and the host I had was not meeting all my needs, so I went looking. I thought they were the thing same (registration and hosting), but learned differently. New host will transfer dns for free, old register wants money to transfer registration--not dns.

Changing domain name servers (DNS) should never cost anything.

When you transfer a domain you must pay for a renewal fee. This includes a year extension on that domain.
