What do you think of these types of sites? - 3/4/2005 15:41:15
http://www.aroundtheweb.com/ Maybe I'm missing something, but these types of sites seem to be set up for the sole purpose of generating Google clicks. While there may be nothing wrong with that, they make it more difficult for people who do legitimate searches. For example, when someone enters a search term or phrase at Google, several of the results are links which bring them to another site that provides no real information except a listing of links to other sites that do offer information. My website is not only listed on several of these but increasingly I'm asked to put links to these types of sites on my site. So anyone have any insights about these sites? Are they good, bad, indifferent? Do they help or hurt as far as ranking goes? thanks, gail

Visit these site with the Google toolbar to see if they have PR or if it is grey/white. This normally tells the inital tale. I also would do a who is lookup to see the registration date (this adds to the PR mention above). At this point Google only shows 240 back links to the site. Registered 2004-09-12. They currently are running at PR5. Take care, Brian

Google is infested with directory type sites - and it's their own fault. They are running a broken algo that delivers broken results. Personally, I like Teoma. quote:

Thanks fellers! You both always provide such good information! I'm curious though. I took out a domain name, digicamlinks, and was going to fill it up with links to related sites offering quality info about digital photography. I planed to included google ad sense ads. I was warned against doing so, lest I suffer the wrath of Google, so I scrapped the idea. So what the heck is the difference between what I wanted to do and these sites who are doing the same? I"m extremely appreciative of Google, who lets a little guy, er gal, like me make a few bucks every month. I think they have leveled the playing field to give us a chance along with the big boys/gals, and for than I'm grateful! So it's understandable, I don't want to rock the boat with a links site. Still, I see so many purely links site with Google ads smack in your face upon entry. They don't seem to suffer any consequences. But I will?!? Any additional insights would be appreciated. gail
