samfreedom -> I Don't Even Know How to Explain This! (3/7/2005 3:27:04)

Bottom line is this....

Somehow, a site that I open upon local and then "connect" with always shows up with another site's info remotely. Not always, but eventually!

My two sites

www.sam-freedom.com, and
www.searchestate.ws

Somehow, my searchestate site keeps getting written into my sam-freedom.com site and I can't see how or why....

I know how to use this thing pretty well, but every time I come online to design my site, some of the latter's pages and folders are showing up remotely when the former is what I brought up locally.

Can anyone even hypothesize how remote files from one can appear in the remote files of the other? I really don't see it as an oversight -- it's constant!

I've no idea...

Thanks for trying...

Sam

I'm not sure I follow this but here goes.....

Both of those links take me to exactly the same thing.

If you are saying they should take me to different sites then I would question how you have loaded these to the web.

Are they on the same host using the same account?

Have you got subdomains set up?

If they're both sitting in the same folder on the same host then you will just keep getting one appearing. The browser always goes for the first index.htm/html it finds in the root domain.

Hi Jaybee,

Thanks for giving this your best.

Well, let's pretend I'm just working with one site.
They're both on the same ISP, by the way. So I open
the site and then using FP connect remotely. THEN
I open up a different site and connect remotely also,
but to THAT site's name.

Sometimes I'll move back and forth 'tween the sites
change thigns here, adding this, subtrating that, and I
don't know how half of one site ends up on another.

Shouldn't the fact that when I create the connection info in
the specs area, I use the address of the site in it protect me from sites being confused with one another?

Thanks,
Sam

Right, both sites are on 1&1. Got that. Do they both have a completely separate account or are you trying to host both sites under the same account? i.e. only paying one bill for hosting?

I don't like the sound of having two sites open and connected at the same time. I reckon FP is getting itself in a right old twist. It's possible that it's caching stuff as it goes and it uploads the cache. If you're switching backwards and forwards it uploads whatever is there at the time. It's not something I would ever try.

I would never advise anyone to edit online anyway. You don't have a backup available if something goes wrong and it's not much fun for your visitors if things are changing as they navigate.

Do your work on your local machine and then upload it when you've finished.

Hi again, Jaybee,

Same hosting acct. Free 3-yr account offer.
My brother pointed out the working online feature one-time,
but I'm pretty sure I'm not doing that. When I work on a file,
I open by double clicking on it in the left pane (the local pane)
and then when done, I save it, and then upload it.

This might clue you in....it SEEMS to some extent like when I
open site A, it shows me all the files of site B in the local pane, but if I go to the folder where site A resides, I find that all of site A's files are still actually in there.

I found that out soon after so I haven't been editing or saving anything just to keep from *really* messing things up because I think I have a chance of saving all this.

What do you think of this....could the problem be in one of the FP special folders that keeps track of all things uploaded, etc. I don't understand those vti or vtn folders or the private folder. I know they have a function and I basically get it, but didn't feel it was tremendously important to understand it - and to just let it do its job. But maybe I somehow affected those so that even though the actual folders are correct, Frontpage is showing wrong information because the place where it draws from, or keeps track of webfiles is corrupted.

Make any sense?

Thanks again,
Sam

You have two sites in the same account? How are you pointing your domain names at them?

samfreedom -> RE: I Don't Even Know How to Explain This! (3/7/2005 19:08:19)

By 2 Sites in the same acct what I mean is that this account allows me to use up to 3 domains. When I began publishing to them, I simpley went into frontpage, and entered the website address of a particular site and set up the remote connection.

Now each time I log on, it just asks for my username and password.

I'll go back and be meticulous about it this time, but I pointed the sites there a while ago and everything worked just great for quite some time.

Thank you
Sam

If you still get no joy then talk to your host. It may be that the FPSEs have got messed up or there's something odd with the ftp setup for the multiple domains.
