Missing bt Broadband connection - 3/7/2005 13:12:42
Please help. Been off work sick for a week. I got back today to find when I try to access Outlook Express 6, the "connect to" box is empty. My modem has completely gone of the face of the pc and even my dial up ones have gone. So can't choose any as all boxes are empty. Run the usual detectors, Norton, Adaware, spybbot and I don't appear to have anything. However, PF Usage is running at 560 MG, surely this can't be right??
As machine is running so slowly, can't re-install bt broadband cd rom either!!
Really need this e-mail and internet facility at work, please help.

Sounds like someone has been playing around on your machine while you were away. If you're in an office get your IT guys to come in and take a look at it.

If not, try booting into safe mode and see if you can get anything going that way. If your Norton is fully up to date then run it from safe mode. Clear out all your temp files and cache. Make sure Adaware is fully up to date and run that from safe mode as well.

The only other thing we can think of, are you on XP and has SP2 just been installed?

Yes, runnng xp, SP2 is installed and Norton is fully up to date. I don't have an "IT" guy. Work in a Timber Yard, full of guys, I am only office person!! (Bet they have been dowloading something dodgy whilst I was off!!) Will do what you suggest today, Thanks.

Try reinstalling the modem or better yet just call you ISP and have them walk you through this. Most will as they want your business to stay with them.

Blessed be ;),

That'll be the one, yup.

I quote the reference manual:

quote:

Definition:

1) A method to detect and correct errors by adding bits derived from a block or string of bits to the block.
2) An algorithm to compute bits characteristic of a block based on the algebra of polynomials over the integers, modulo 2.
3) The characteristic bits of a block.

A printed CD, such as your XP CD can't be corrected. The other option is to try the disc in another machine - as sometimes, it can be the drive rather than the disc.
