Today we have CSS, presentation separated from structure, workarounds for viewers with disabilities, device independence, semantic coding, search engine friendliness, XHTML etc etc. Those are sometimes called "web standards" although they aren't actual standards. But tables have been buried a long time ago. Of course that doesn't mean they're still not used. At least for me the background gives headache. I can't read text easily, so I tend to do what most of the users do when they encounter difficulties with a website: they leave. They go and google something else. EDIT: Just wanted to add that your website (counting out the bg) is a huge improvement over the original version.
