How do I get rid of the bands seen in this gradient image created in FX MX 2004?

use 100% dither in the gif options (and 256 colours) or export as jpeg with "sharpen jpeg edges" checked in the options in the drop down (top right of the panel next to where it says optimize) and at say around 75 setting for the quality
