Setbuilder -> Frontpage 2003 and XP and Sharepoint (3/9/2005 17:59:29)

I am trying to use FP2003 as an html WYSIWYG editor. I have a website on a webhosting computer, and a copy of that on my home computer (Drive E) What want to do (and what I did in the old Front Page) was to use the FP as an editor, and then copy the changed (or new) html pages to the server for display to the public.

Now when I try to edit, or create a new page, I get the message: "An error occurred accessing your Windows Sharepoint services site folders...etc."

I wasn't trying to use Sharepoint, only the WYSIWYG features and html creation of Frontpage 2003.

Is there some setting I should set to eliminate all this reference to Sharepoint. I tried to set the view to folders, and not webs, but that didn't seem to help. Has Microsoft screwed me by deeply integrating Sharepoint into Frontpage?

Thanks, Matt

Matt

Welcome To Outfront

As far as I'm aware, Sharepoint Services is only available on Windows 2003 Server - what you more likely need to do is upgrade the FPSE from 2000 to 2002.

I was told by one of collegues that IIS would work on XP, and that I should install that. For the life of me I can't figure out why Microsoft has screwed up such a good product by imbedding Sharepoint into it, and making it absolutely useless for people who don't use Sharepoint.

Thanks for your reply. Matt

Your colleague is correct in that IIS does work on XP, but for usage with FP2003, you will need to upgrade/install the FP2002 extensions.

Sharepoint is only for the more advanced features of FP, not all of it[;)]

Well, do I need to install Sharepoint?

All I want to do is use FP as a WYSIWYG html editor. I also want to see my existing htlm files. Should I abandon FP altogether and get some other editor? I know I can code in html, but I sort of got used to the FP editor.

Another option is to go back to the old FP2002.

You don't need to install Sharepoint, you need to install this:

I gather you will be using FP2003 with IIS6 and for this you need to apply the FPSE2002 with the Sharepoint Administration tool, That's usually the source of confusion with all this.

MS communities are a good source of information for all things IIS and FP. From that site the following information should be used as a guide to setting up.

All the patches and updates must be applied to the 2002 extensions (that you would install from the FP2003 disc) to clear up some bugs.

Thank you. I will try that. Matt

OK, People, I did everything you suggested. I even went onto the MS Community and found another person who had the same problem. They got some help, but the help did not answer the question.

I am still getting the "The server "" timed out ...." message. I will repeat. I am not trying to publish, am not trying to build a web, just create and edit webpages using Frontpage 2003.

Whenever I change or add a new html page, and try to save it, I get the same error message. IIS is running, (or installed anyway) and Server extensions are also installed.

Does anyone know how I can create/edit html pages in Frontpage2003 without getting these error messages, and actually saving my changes?

Thanks for you help. But so far nothing has worked. What am I doing wrong?

Matt

Are you using IIS as a local server on your own pc to test before you publish to a web host, or are you just wishing to use FP2003 by itself?

I use the IIS to test locally for things like databases or asp pages; straight html doesn't really need that kind of testing, preview in browser suffices.

Just trying to clarify because we may have assumed the first option.

Setbuilder -> RE: Frontpage 2003 and XP and Sharepoint (3/11/2005 0:14:15)

I really am not using any form of website on my computer.
I use my home computer to develop the webpages, and then upload them to the webhosting company.

I keep a copy of everything on my computer, so if they (the webhosting company) or I decide to go away, I will have everything.

Having said that, I now think I have the problem solved.

What I was doing was trying to work on my files which were on my "E:\" drive. It is a physical drive that I have dedicated to my backup of the website. In fact it is called "E:\Webbackup"

When I tried to modify the files on "E:\" I would get this message that the server timed out. It also said that there were no files on E:\. What I did was I used my file browser, saw the files, copied them to another unused drive "D:\" and now everything is editable. I have not tried to move it back to E:\, but that is probably my next step.

Thank you all for your help. I really like the forum here, and will definitely visit it as I progress. Thanks again for the interest in my problem.

Matt
