what are vti files?

Bean -> what are vti files? (4/27/2001 20:24:00)
I'm building a new site - already have about 76 pages. I just ran a Find Files in Windows Explorer to see exactly how many *.htm files I have in this web, and to my great surprise, there are 2 of everything, one in the folder I put it in, and a second in a vti_cnf subfolder of my folder. What's up with that? Can I delete them or would that make the FP gods angry? Thanks.
