Blinking word with FireFox....? - 3/11/2005 23:25:32
I just downloaded the FireFox browser and when I view a certain page on my website, a word "blinks" off and on. Any ideas why this is happening? Is it some wonderful feature that I am not aware of?? lol:)

ok... now I'm confused! I thought it was FireFox causing the "blinking" word, but I think its FP. I checked the code (something I know very little about) and noticed that FP has inserted <blink><b>annually</b></blink>. I only wanted the word to be in bold and that's what I did in FP. IE doesn't show the blinking word, but FireFox does. Why is FP inserting a blinking tag? Actually, its kinda cool.... adds emphasis to the word and all, but not what I wanted. Any response or explanation would be greatly appreciated. I suppose I could just remove the blink tag, but would like to know why its happening regardless.

Thanks,
Susie :)

I've heard of FP adding a lot of uneccesary code... but this is the first time I've seen it add blinking text...

I think it's a glitch, one time deal. You shouldn't have to worry about it again.

Hi Bobby,

Thanks for the explanation! I just noticed that the blinking shows in Netscape as well as FireFox. IE doesn't show the blinking. I will just remove the tags and watch out for it in the future when using the <b></B> element in FP.

Susie :)

It's kinda funny... because if I remember right, IE used to be the only browser where blinking text did work...

I never even knew you could create blinking text in FP (not that I know a lot about FP to begin with). But after doing a Google search on the topic, it appears that blinking text is a big "website no-no", up there with scrolling marquees on the annoyance list. Guess I should re-check the "annoyance factor" on my site! Its just that I have so much information and text, that I try to break it up with something "visual". Hmmm..... perhaps I've branded my site as "amateur and annoying".

I seem to remember that the blink tag was introduced by NN, but I'm not sure IE ever supported it (if it did, the support didn't make it past IE3). If I recall correctly, IE came out with the marquee tag as sort of a response to Netscape's blink tag (sort of an "oh yeah, well we can have some annoying visual effects too! So there!"). I also recall that, back in the day, IE proponents would apply the blink tag to their entire page, just to annoy Netscape users (for whom the entire page would blink).

The browser wars were so much simpler then!

Cheers,

Kevin

LOL

You could be right... it's been a while...

Frontpage historically supports IE specific elements and ignores the others, but it's been a while since I dabbled in it as well.
