A Fanfare Sounds....... - 3/14/2005 8:25:14
....and onto the stage steps this old, weak and timid man.

He stands center stage and holds up a banner which states

Please critique my Site

He then turns and drags his aged, wrinkled body away without a word being said.

The audience (all OF members) quickly scramble to the site and howls of laughter are heard around the auditorium.

This old, weak and timid man was indeed the greatest comedian to have ever been on this stage.

Notes for the audience

He is awaiting content from his client.
The client wanted warm colours.
His hover buttons seem unstable.
Tried for validation but got something back that he didn't understand. Not surprising really as HTML is way beyond him at the moment.
The client demanded a hit counter - so he has got one. How do you advance the numbers to say 4000. Tried but failed.

  • He is awaiting content from his client. > Not much you can do about that.
  • The client wanted warm colours. > White doesn't = warm when all you see out the window is snow.:)
  • His hover buttons seem unstable. > They're inherently unstable.:) Avoid them if you can.
  • Tried for validation but got something back that he didn't understand. Not surprising really as HTML is way beyond him at the moment. > No DOCTYPE Found! Falling Back to HTML 4.01 Transitional. You need something like this at the top of your pages... <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01 Transitional//EN"> :)
  • The client demanded a hit counter - so he has got one. How do you advance the numbers to say 4000. Tried but failed. > You should be able to just double click on it in FP and reset it. I'm not sure but perhaps you need to need to define the number of digits as well? There are also a number of free ones available just google "hit counter". In any case I think they look tacky and don't mean anything any way. After all you can reset them to whatever you want.:)

Thanks Mike for your comments.

I didn't want hit counters but he insisted upon it.

Will go for validation again with the amendment made as you suggested.

Point taken with hover buttons.

Ian

Mike the site looks creme to me #FFFFCC or were you talking about the villa. :)

The pictures aren't inviting enough for me on the homepage - you mention pool but I want to see it straight away because that could be something that would make me want to rent there

loose the hover buttons as I heard they cause lots of problems

Thats me done for now :)

Hi Golfer,

You say the client wanted warm colours, by warm do you mean "inviting"? I'm afraid sky blue and pale yellow don't do it for me.

The spacing of things also seems a bit excessive to me on all pages, i think things should be a little closer together, there really isn't any need as far as I can see for the opening page to scroll.

As for content, make it up! Add everything to the site that YOU think should be there! Of course i mean if the client isn't already using the site and promoting it. If they already are, create a dummy page within the site and add all the made-up content there, show them what their site will look like when it's full of content.

Nicole

Eeeeeyuk, get rid of that java menu. Not only is it unstable, it took ages to load and I'm on fast broadband, the Availabil button is cut short in Firefox.

The site itself I have no argument with. It's fine but that menu........

pics could do with more contrast - if you have photoshop or some other programme where you can alter the levels (i.e. the distribution of the white- black values) then use that. a quick bit of tweaking on the first pic in photoshop/fireworks shows what can easily be done
(this pic is not greatly optimised as the one from the site was quite harshly compressed - there are visible compression artefacts or "blotches" in the sky. mine is just an example of what a bit of visual optimisation can do ;)

Thanks everyone for the great feedback.

Not happy myself with instability of hover buttons so they are going.

Will fill, tweak and improve the site as per your suggestions.

Ian

What hover buttons are you talking about? I don't get any.

Is this a website? No links or anything? :)

Sorry to say that.

Yes it is, you have arrived on the scene somewhat late.

Then don't say it.

If you'd gone back a couple of posts you'd have seen Ian made this comment

Now I wonder if it could be that when you got to the site he was working on it?
