jaybee. I haven't got NIS but had a look at the instructions. Seems reasonably straight forward to me but why would a non IT literate visitor bother when he/she sees what needs to be done to get the images. I don't think they would bother unless they knew they wanted to see a particular image. Hope that make sense. Ian

Well actually I just had a thought, if they can't see the images then they can't see the images on that page either.... duh! OK, the guy that contacted me wants to see the pictures on the site and is willing to be guided through fixing NIS as he's had this problem on other sites too. I have a php method (when I get time to install and test it) of preventing hotlinking which will get round the problem for my site but NIS users will still have the blockage elsewhere. (no pun intended)

Yes, I can put it on my business site. I got round this guy by mailing it to him but, yes you're right. Amazing how you can't think straight when you're tired. It's those flaming mailing lists that have done it! [:D]

i am also having a problem with people not seeing images, but they don't get the little red box. i only discovered it when a client kept asking me to add images to the site i was developing. She could see images such as her logo which were stored in my /images folder, but anything that was then in a sub folder just didn't appear. I have found a few people with this problem and because the little red box doesn't show, they don't realise images are missing. I solved the problem by getting rid of any sub folders, but it makes managing the site messy. Somebody suggested to me it is a problem with internet explorer updates. Anyone else come across it?

Just an update. I've replaced .htaccess blocking with a php script. Works like a dream and all the NIS users can see the pics. As to the images in subfolders not showing, check your links. Sometime FP does a funny with them and you need to go in and change the code. It would have been useful to see a url with the problem.

www.fundraisingideas.com.au is one of them. It's only a problem some people have, most people see them. Because there are advertisers on the site, I store all their images in a folder called advertisers then a subfolder in their name. If I move them up a level they can be seen, but it makes the site harder to manage. I haven't moved them up in this site yet, but www.partydirectory.com.au I have moved them up and there is now no problem.

crezzy... your problem sounds like a classic case of "NIS interference". Do you know if your client or visitors are running Norton Internet Security (NIS), McAfee Internet Security, or similar software such as ZoneAlarm? NIS (and others) has the ability to block images that it suspects are advertisements, and it determines this in two ways - either by the words used in the URL or the dimensions of the image itself. When NIS blocks these images, the little red box will NOT appear on your page, even in IE.

If the URL to your images contain such words as "advertisement", "advertisers" or "ads" (and there's many others), NIS considers it an advertisement and blocks it from displaying if the user has that option set. This would easily explain why your images start appearing once you move them up a level so that the URL no longer contains those words. Avoid the use of these "suspect" words in your URL's and you should be able to avoid this problem.

FWIW... the other method NIS uses to block "suspect" ads is by comparing your image dimensions with those commonly used for advertisements. If, for instance, your images are 468x60 or 300x250, then NIS considers them to be ads and will block them from displaying. Here's a list of what NIS will block:

Obviously your problem could have been due to an incorrect URL when the images were in the subfolder, and it was fixed when you moved them up a level, but I suspect it may be due to your client (or visitors) running something like Norton Internet Security. Other "internet security" software will also block similar items, but I don't have a list for those. And it goes without saying that disabling the "ad blocking" feature in this type of software will also restore your images.
