Contact submission page? - 3/25/2005 11:09:30
I am redoing a website that someone else created. I am a newbie and am not well versed in html.

There is a 'contact us' screen and when someone completes the fields and presses 'submit' it goes to another screen to acknowledge their entry. On that particular screen I can not figure out where that is in the FP files. I can find the actual 'contact us' screen but not the submission screen. I tried figuring it out in the code screen and I don't see anything. I need to edit that page and put the new java applet menu, etc on it and other edits. Also when someone does not fill out the fields on the contact screen it is programmed to go to a screen telling them they did not fill out the information and to do so before it will submit.

the website (and don't laugh once you see it the way it is now) is www.mwfpa.org if you want to see the set up of the contact screen.

I should have had these cosmetic changes, etc published to the website over 2 weeks ago :).

How do I get to those pages to make all the edits?

Thank you!
Judy

here is your contact form:
<form METHOD="post" ACTION="http://www.mwfpa.org/contact.asp">
it would appear that the form is processed to the same page. this is asp - you cannot do view/source to see the asp code. all you will see is the html that asp has written. you have to gain access to the server and download the page. Have you done that yet?

are you really using a java applet for a menu? or do you mean javascript for mouseovers? I dont recommend java applets for menus.

Gulp! I think I am suddenly in over my head here...........:)

When I initially copied our website into FP I see there is a contact.html page. I edited that page to new menu, etc. I browse it in IE and it looks fine. When I test it in IE to just click 'submit' and it comes back with the error that the form was not completed it defaults back to all of the old menu, etc and also when I complete the form and it goes the to submission page and verifies your information it again defaults back to that old menu, etc.

I am stuck now. I have everything in FP yet and no I have not done ANY edits on the live site nor have I had the guts to upload my changes yet. I do have access to transfer/upload everythingl with id and pw. I don't know what exactly to do at this point. I understand what you are saying Dan, however I am not sure what to do exactly(?) Is it too advanced for someone who knows very little about html coding or can I be baby stepped through this? lol

Thanks!
Judy

Double Gulp......

I posted a message a few days ago asking anyone about using java applets for menus and received no response. I created this menu from button maker trial version on coffeecup.com. Please take a look at it and let me know which one it is Dan.

Thank you!

Since I have put the menu on my pages and test it in IE I get the message that IE has restricted this file from showing active content that could access your computer and then have to tell it to allow blocked content (script/active x). Will everyone get that message or is only because of the security settings on my computer? I am so confused!

Here is the code for the menu I am using:

<APPLET CODE="joybutton.class" WIDTH=151 HEIGHT=396>

Do I need to scrap this and use another menu type? I wanted an interactive menu option and FP doesnt have the colors I need or want and I did not want to have to go through all the editing of their interactive menus. I love the look of the menu I created from coffeecup.com but if I shouldn't use it I appreciate the input!

Thanks again,
Judy

frankly, html is cake compared with asp... however, I have seen lots of people on here be "baby stepped" through it.
Im going to wait a little while for someone else to discuss downloading your site (publish down) Im rusty on FP but people like jaybee, bobby, dan or Larry will guide you ..wait a day and see who responds here.
when you downloaded the files, did you get files with .asp extensions? how exactly did you download the site?
browse thru the site "live" and notice how many pages have .asp extensions

I would recommend scrapping it and avoiding java applets. interactive menus are best done in javascript and/or CSS (Cascading Style sheets) there is a bit of a learning curve but plenty of friendly help here. Question: how are your graphics skills? can you make your own buttons in a graphics editor?

most (all?) of us here recommend that you never do live edits - why? as soon as you change something live on the server, your "local" copy is not the same and you have no backup at your immediate disposal and the next tim eto work with it locally, the version is different. we recommend making changes locally and using FP's file/publish (not ftp) to take the changed pages to the server. that way they are always in synch - make sense??

arrrggghhhh......

Well, 1) we are nonprofit and I have to be beyond frugle in whatever I do or use at this company. I am good at being frugle but not litterally walking on water! We have no graphics software in order to create buttons, etc. I wish I did. It would make life a lot easier and less time consuming for me. I have searched the net to find free ways to do what I do.

So are you saying that my menu is not a javascript menu, but a true java applet (which I have no idea what the difference is)? In your opinion Dan, why do you not recommend java applets?

wow, is anybody here? Is this still working?:)

I was typing another reply here shortly after the one above and I got knocked out of this forum and I could not get back in until now. I kept getting page cannot be displayed screen.

I don't see that anyone has posted anything anywhere for quite awhile either. Did anyone else have this problem?

Let's see if this post goes through(??)

that tells me there it is a java applet. java is a full featured programming language designed for the net and quite useful.. however java applets dont run on all machine and are being used less and less. javascript runs native on a browser and thus was designed for the browser and while many on this forum always caution thatit can be turned off, there really arent many users who know how and even if they do, they soon encounter so many sites where their lack of javascript either forces them to 1] get used to it or 2] turn it back on.
Put another way, javascript is a normal method, java applets are seldom used.

what version of fp are you using? as to graphics software, I think bobby recommends a free one - gimp - google for it

what is wrong with the buttons on the link above? it used javascript to make the mouseovers - why abandon that?

Thank you Dan! You have been extremely helpful on everything :-)

1)I just purchased FP2003 to use for our website.

2) I will try the 'gimp' suggest and see what I can do

3) I am trying to update our site cosmetically and redo the menu also along with many other updates. The java applet I created is so much nicer looking and professional but *sigh* I guess I will scrap that idea and see what gimp has to offer on creating my own buttons. I found other programs free to create my own buttons, however they didn't have any interactive options to them.

If anyone has any good free programs (sorry, but I have no options at this time to purchase anything. It was difficult enough to convince the board of directors that I needed to purchase a web creation software.....lol!) Duh!

Okay, well back to the drawing board for me.........

Thanks again Dan!

oh by the way Dan.

I went to your website. Are you still working on it? The only link on top that works is the 'References' link. None of the other are clickable for me (?)

Just curious......

lol Goodness! you sound like me now........

no time? but we sure find time to do anything except the task at hand don't we? lol I love creating things for other people however sure hate it when I can't come up with a way or the tools free to do something!

what did the buttons look like? Well if you go to coffeecup.com you will see what can be done with the buttons.
They are the 3 stages, initial, hover and click. If you look at our website again www.mwfpa.org they had a navy blue background with a bit of shading (black to blue kind of) with pale yellow lettering and 10 or 12 font - arial and rectangular
The hover colors were reverse and the click colors I don't remember. It all just needs to match the logo on top of pages.

They are really nice though! :) I just love the way the applet looks and works. The reason I asked about anyone ever using java applets and their thoughts on them is because once I saw how it worked on the FP screens and how you had to view them, etc and that I had never really seen a menu like that on any website I had been to I figured there had to be some catch on using them-my luck anyway!

Is there a way I can send you the java applet menu? I can send you the html code and the files I also had to download to make it work if that helps you.......

wait, I just email you Dan lol and now see this message from you.

So then is the menu I did okay? If I use it though will everyone get the message when entering our site about this part that I posted in a previous message on this thread:
Since I have put the menu on my pages and test it in IE I get the message that IE has restricted this file from showing active content that could access your computer and then have to tell it to allow blocked content (script/active x). Will everyone get that message or is only because of the security settings on my computer?

Or is that because I am using marquees on some pages??

I am not familiar with what the active x control files are, sorry.

Judy
