JanetGeorge -> Vince's drop down menu - help? (5/8/2001 20:37:00)

Maybe I'm thick but I can't make it work.

I think I've followed the instructions but I keep getting a "menu is undefined" error message.

Any ideas!

Hi,

What were you doing before you got the error?
Could you publish what you've done so we can check the code?

Cheers
Andy

Thanks Andy
I've actually managed to fix the script problem and it looks fine in Internet Explorer. BUT - the age old problem - Netscape.

Everytime I thought I had it cracked -

Two problems in Netscape
1st - page width
and
2nd - although the top border html looks exactly the same in the original index page and the newindex (hell - they ARE the same top border) the text in the newindex is small! I'd appreciate if you could have a look.

The page is http://www.hounds.org.uk/newindex.htm

Hi,

There are a few problems with your cell widths - I think your code for the menu is fine.

If you look at your percentages, they vary depending on the column, MSIE will forgive this, NN won't.

Thanks Andy.
I fixed all those but still had the same problem - the only thing that fixed it was taking out the top and bottom borders (although the rest of the site is fine in Netscape with them.)

A couple of other little problems you might be able to help me with. The d-d menu changes all links on a page to the same colour as the links in the d-d menu - I've got over this in the test page by formatting each of them individually but it's a pain. If I'm going to put the d-d on every page, the only alternative I can think of is to change the link colours in the d-d to one more suited to the page background - is there another solution??

The other is that - in Netscape - there is a small gap between the sub-menus that lets bits of the page show through. Any ideas.

Any advice appreciated.

Hi Janet,

The menu uses CSS, so any links in a cell on the page will change colour as the menu does. You could go for a different colour scheme but your presentation looks pretty smart as it is. Another option is to specify a font colour for all links on the white background.

The white spaces are due to NN not recognisng cell borders as MSIE does - we thought it a minor problem considering the low number of NN users and the fact that it doesn't look so bad anyway.

Cheers Andy

I've decided to just use the drop down on the home page for now and use FP nav.bars for lower pages.

Netscape is a pain - but you're right - not many people use it so I'm not too worried and I think the menu looks pretty smart.

I'm a newbie to javascript but I've learnt quite a lot just playing around with.

I have to say this forum is a real find! I've been using FP for about 2 years now and I still find 'interesting' glitches. Nice to know there's somewhere where I can get help.

Many thanks.
