Should I upgrade my FrontPage? - 3/29/2005 12:54:38
I presently use FrontPage 2000 and am in the process of upgrading my computer to an Inspiron 9300 with Windows XP Professional (Version 5.1, Service Pack 2). Is it time to upgrade FrontPage also? What benefits would I get with FrontPage 2003? Does FrontPage 2003 have any known defects I should avoid using (such as the hover buttons in FP2000 and allowing FP 2000 to write your CSS). Thanks so much for your input. Sigrid

i have not upgraded to 2003 so i will leave it to others to answer that but i can tell you that an upgrade from 2000 to 2002 is essential!!! much much better - you could probably get 2002 on ebay

Favorite enhancement from 2000 to 2002/3 is the tabbed html pages!

Thanks for the information. I know I'm lazy but I like using the navigation utilities in FrontPage. Are they all "stable" in FP 2003 in the various browsers? I know hoover buttons weren't in FP2000. However, I read that the FP 2003 rollover buttons are now in JavaScript so I assume they are stable, but are there any other pitfalls? I'm really cautious because many of our visitors are STILL using NN4 ! (And they are scientists -- go figure.) I need to move to CSS, but I will have to dumb down everything for NN4. (Which raises another question: Can FP2003 help me with CSS or is it better to code in my own CSS stylesheet and link to it?) Thanks a lot. Sigrid

I would go with 2002. 2003 has got allot of sharepoint and office crap in it. M$ really needs two version. One with the crap one with out. Don't get me wrong its a 2003 is a good product. But for Internet stuff 2002 has all you need.

Hi Everyone, this topic is exactly what I was hoping for. Like Sigrid, I've been using FP 2000 for some time. Thankfully my hosting company had the option of sticking with FP2000 extensions, or upgrading them to FP2002 (he advised against upgrading at the time). But recently do to SEO related issues, I have started hosting some of the sites I design with other hosting companies. In the process, I started have problems logging in to FP on the new servers, and found out that they were FP2002 extensions. Needless to say, I found out that there is compat. problems with using FP2000 with FP2002 extensions. For the most part most of my web design has been in html, and starting to do a bit of CSS. But I have been wanting to get into some of these advanced xhtml, dhtml, etc.. I have heard not to use front page to do CSS (at least for 2000), but beyond that my knowledge of what is ok and not ok to use FP for is kind of limited. Is there anywhere that I can get some real factual comparisons between the 3 versions? Also, Bobby, could you tell me what kind of backword issues you encountered with FP2003? I've heard that since Microsoft came out with anything after 2002 it has been requiring this activation of the program for piracy protection. Well, my question on that is this. Say I buy FP2003, install it, and put it on my office computer, then later decide that I want to have it on a different office computer. So the Hardware recognition changes when I install it on the new computer. From what i have read, I'll probably have to call them to do the activation. So, does anyone know what happens to the installation on the other computer? I'm just curious how it works, cause I've also heard some people say that trying to switch to another computer is quite a nightmare. Thanks for the help, great board.
