I have xp service pack 2. All of a sudden last night I started getting all these ads popping up at the bottom of my task bar... currently have 17. I have "pop up blocker" turned on in xp. I have also run a free adware program, but that is not getting rid of whatever is causing this.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Sounds like a hijacker.

Download and run

Adaware, Spybot Search & Destroy
Run your viruschecker (make sure it's up to date with the latest sigs)
Make sure you've got all the windows patches.

After you've got it clean then get SpywareGuard and Spyware Blaster to keep it clean. And start using Firefox instead of Internet Explorer.

Shoot The Messenger for a start that can often be a cause as well.
Also give UnPlug n' Pray a whirl and run the Shields up test for safe measure.

I would do all of what is mentioned above and sometimes it helps to run the scans (like Adaware and Spybot) in safe mode, just make sure you either boot in safe mode with networking so you can download the most recent definitions for the programs or update them all prior to booting into safe mode.

i have a friend with this predicament and he cant even boot. can i take adaware etc on a cd and install from safe mode? is F8 safe mode? thanks raj

yeah you can you can bring it on a CD or you should be able to download it if you boot into safe mode with networking and yes F8 will bring up the menu to choose Safe Mode or Safe Mode with Networking.

I spent a couple of hours on a friends PC yesterday - what a mission.
Each of those programs is worth running, and some remove spyware that others dont.
Try the Microsoft Antispyware too - it is fairly good at that task.

After running those, you might at least get an indication of which spyware program is running (if it cant be removed)

Also if you are still having problems after all that you can Run HiJack This and post the logs to see if there is some other stuff that those programs are missing.

Also double check that you have Windows Messenger turned off, and then key your firewall to shut down IE for everything but Windows Updates...
