Would like my site to be more webmaster friendly - 4/3/2005 20:20:58
I purchased FrontPage2003 in late December, just before deploying to Iraq, in order to set up my own milblog. I wanted more flexibility than blogspot provides, so I opted to get my own domain and dole out the relatively meagher $8/month. This site is very primitive, I am sure. I knew absolutely nothing about creating a website and learned everything by reading a $20 book from Barnes and Noble. Because I am on a relatively slow internet connection, which is unavoidable, I would like to make my site a little more webmaster friendly. I will briefly outline how I currently update my site and how I would prefer that it be done.

When I update my site, I need to upload the homepage, the archives menu and the actual blog entry. Also, archived blogs are not too snazzy looking, as you can see by clicking on "blog archives". If you take a look at the site, then you will probably be able to figure out why this is.

here is the URL: http://www.airbornehogsociety.com

The method that I would prefer to use, to update my site, is to simply have a form where I type in the title, the date, the blog entry and click enter and then, presto, the newest blog entry is posted. This would be password protected, of course. I would also like to be able to post photos in the entries, as I did in the April 4th blog entry. If this is not possible via use of a form, then I would also be open to some means of updating that only required me to upload the new entry, rather than uploading a new index file, blog file and blog archives file.

One other issue - my archived blogs are pretty plain looking. Only the blog entry on my homepage looks the way that I would like all of them to look. However, this is a lot of copying and pasting, if I were to manually do this to each blog entry. I suspect that the answer may lie in dynamic web templates, but I do not know enough about these to be sure. Also, this slow internet connection and my limited time to work on this is not conducive to me experimenting with dwt's by uploading test pages. Any suggestions?

Recommendations for any of these issues, as well as any other recommendations and critiques would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Probably the easiest way for you is to use a hosted blog. You can link these into your site but use their machine to handle all the messy stuff and just tailor it to your needs.

I don't use blogs but the following seem to be what you need. Check them out carefully though as some may have ads on the free options and make sure that you can link it into your own site, usually just a case of a hyperlink to your blog page.
