Link bars - 4/4/2005 4:35:26
I renamed some of my webpages today and now the link bars show as an x instead of the style of the other link bars. They show up fine on my computer and I've uploaded every file that seems related (seems to be the _derived ones, as that is in the address of the links that are ok). It's just that when I go to my website online, they are not the same. They still link to the other pages, they just don't show up "all pretty". Hopefully I've made this slightly clearer than mud. And yes, I'm a newbie.

Hi Pixie65 and welcome to Outfront.

Try opening the site (www) live in FP then select from the menu > Tools > Recalculate Hyperlinks and see if that helps.

Thanks for the welcome Mike54. I'm not sure what you mean by "live" in FP. I followed your instructions in Page View then uploaded everything again. (I'm using an ftp if that makes any difference.) But still no joy I'm afraid.

Sorry to dredge this up again. But I have decided to tackle it again. I have discovered the missing files must be named _overlay/(name of page).htm_nav_ice000_hbtn.gif

This is because in Frontpage the page links that do have the pretty colours still, have two files, and the ones that don't work have one file.

I have gone to Link Bar Properties and selected the style again, even though it is still chosen, and I've saved again, but the files do not show up. The linkbars still look right in Frontpage, the right style is still chosen, it's just that the files are not showing up in the list of files.

The really weird thing is that ice is the colour I used when doing the style of the links on my second website. I'm not using ice on the one I'm having the problem with.

Pixie, FTP does make a difference because you need to make sure you upload all the hidden files as well.

Have a go at uploading the site using Frontpage's publish option.

Thanks jaybee, but I have to use an ftp because my isp doesn't provide/allow for Frontpage. (Oh they tell me they do now, if I pay extra per month.)

I have now discovered a missing file with sumipntg000 in it. Not that it helps me. I have to find it in order to upload it.:)

Which tells me you're using the Sumi Painting theme.

Look at your web in windows explorer and make a note of all the folder names. If you miss any of the folder contents when you upload then your theme won't work.

Thanks. Still trying. I double clicked on derived in the ftp and it showed all the files. The ones in question are listed and I've uploaded them, but still no luck. I've uploaded so many things over and over. Just another weird thing is that some of them don't give me the "do you want to overwrite" thing, which makes it seem like they are not uploaded even though I know I have uploaded them.

/pixie/_derived/plushies.htm_cmp_Pixel100_hbtn.gif
<img src="_derived/plushies.htm_cmp_Pixel100_hbtn.gif"

/pixie/_derived/pictures.htm_cmp_Pixel100_hbtn.gif
<img src="_derived/pictures.htm_cmp_Pixel100_hbtn.gif"

Top one is the url and the bottom the image source.
All seems to be correct. The server is saying that the pictures just aren't there. If you've uploaded manually make sure they're in the same folder as the other ones.

If you're on a Unix host the file names must match (upper/lowercase) otherwise Unix thinks they're different files.

Check your hyperlinks in FP and correct any.
If all OK then try a recalculate hyperlinks
then delete the site from the host and upload the whole lot again.

Thank you. I tried some of that. As much as I can follow with my limited understanding. I ended up changing the style and uploading all the files with weird names and the site is still showing the old style except for those same ones as before.

As an aside, I don't know what _vti_cnf is, but it is showing up three times, under themes, under sumipntg and again under themes. Just because I've written these down doesn't mean I have a clue what they are.

Oh and the files with weird names under the themes folder kept showing up over and over again as I was uploading the themes folder. I had to stop in the end, as it kept bringing up the same file names and asking if I wanted to overwrite.

I'm afraid you are dealing with a complete dummy. I can't face doing the whole site again. It will have to stay as it is at least for now. If I mess up the actual content of the site I would completely crack up. It has taken me so long to do.

Don't worry about the vti_cnf folders. That's just FrontPage doing its thing.

Sounds like you've got in a right mess and maybe your FTP program is not helping.

Do you have any friends around who can take a look at what you've done and help out? Preferably someone who knows what they're doing?

Not really. My usual helper is an online friend. We both did a Frontpage course in our respective towns. She learnt about ftp, so was able to help me with that, as I didn't learn about that in my course. Unfortunately she was not taught about the "fancy" stuff like link bars. I wouldn't go back to the guy who ran my course as he was teaching all sorts of courses (you worked at your own pace and just went to him for help) and hadn't dealt with Frontpage for a while. It was usually easier to figure things out myself. (And that's saying something.)

Oh well, this is what happens when you put such stuff in the hands of those who don't know coding. It was all so simple until I changed the names of three pages. As some have said, Frontpage does love creating lots of files.

I have my images hosted, that's the main thing. If I lost that, I'd be really freaking out. They are just colours, the links still take you to the next page. I'll keep telling myself that until I have another stab at it. I'm going to crawl into bed now. Thanks again for all your help. I will definitely let you know if I solve the problem, no doubt if I do I won't know what I did to fix it anyway.:)

Have a play with it over the weekend, if you get nowhere, email me on Monday and I'll see if I can ftp it for you.

Just a thought. Does it matter if there are files still uploaded which are now not being used? Should I delete them? Or try renaming them? I'm referring to the derived files which have the old page names. Oh I'm talking about with the ftp open. The uploaded side. The linkbar files that are not working are there, but some of them are also there with the old page names in them. Clear as mud? Bit scared to delete much in case I can't find things again if needed.

Oh and I actually can't find any of the derived files in Frontpage. Strange, because the colours show up on all pages in Frontpage and show up on some of the pages in explorer.

You won't see them in FP unless you tell it in options to show hidden files.

The old pages shouldn't make any difference but delete them or you'll get confused later on.

Have you checked by the way that you haven't exceeded your web space? That would stop the new files loading.

I am pretty sure I haven't exceeded my webspace. I deleted quite a few images the other day and got down from 6.9mb to around 4 or 5mb. My limit is 10mb.

Don't know if any of this is relevant but I have two internal broken hyperlinks. I'm pretty sure they were there all along even when the linkbars were working. I figured it was because I changed the style of the linkbars and the one I had originally chosen was not being used anymore.

One broken link is in my other website, and there is nothing wrong with that website. So I'm not touching it.

But the other one is in my main website and it is _themes/ice/blank.gif

I have the option of editing it. It says I can replace the broken internal link with the above mentioned file/link/whatever it is in the page _themes/ice/theme.css

Also whilst looking in the Reports view, I noticed one unused theme, it gave me the option to remove it. Didn't touch it for the moment. I'm guessing it is a style I chose and rejected.
