taxes for US residence - 4/4/2005 15:10:57
Hi if my head office is in Missouri, and i sell products to all US states, how would the taxes work on the product? does everyone pay Missouri tax only? or are the taxes state specific dependin where the person was located who purchased the product? any insight would be appreciated.. thanks

Hi Seth,

I don't know, but I recently charged an American client an Australian tax, then refunded him when I discovered that I wasn't required to pay that tax if the money was earned from overseas.

I was charging a GST (Goods & Services Tax) and I believe they also have a similar tax in New Zealand and the UK, but i'm not sure about America or Canada.

So if my case is the same for you, then as a seller in Missouri, you'd only have to pay Missouri Tax, and your customers....well what tax they pay is their concern i guess.

Nicole

My understanding, just from shopping on the Internet myself, is that if the seller has a B&M in the state the buyer is in then taxes are collected by the seller. Otherwise, if the buyer is in another state, then the buyer is "supposed" pay the taxes on there own when they file annually(I'm not actually aware of anyone who does this, but I'm sure there are some) or quarterly with the IRS. The seller collects, and pays no taxes.

Searching on "Internet Sales Tax" will get you quite a bit of info too.

Are you sure you need to pay it at all? In the UK there's a threshold. If you're below that then you don't pay VAT.

That could be the case, but i also think i won't have any trouble being below the threshold this year. I'll look into it though.

I still pay Income Tax, just not the GST on it.
