ritarun -> Unix and Linex (4/11/2005 18:13:30)

I have been checking out some reseller space from a few different places. I have questions.

Some offer Unix boxes.
Some offer Linex boxes.
Some don't say what kind of box.

I have only used Windows servers before. I want to continue to use FP 2003 supplemented by hand coding in HTML.

Are there enough of you out there that are familiar with Unix to help me make the transistion?

What's the biggest difference between a Unix box and a Linex box?
Should I care?

I know that ASP is only for Windows and that I wouldn't be able to use an Access DB except for on a Windows server. Anything else?

I think that is the biggest drawback. If I am not mistaken, there is little difference between UNIX and LINUX, from your point of view. Meaning, any code that will work on one, works on the other. Hopefully someone will correct me if I am wrong.

The main difference between Unix & Linux is the fact that Linux is free, whereas Unix is a paid for version, and there's more technical stuff, but we don't need to go into that :)

ASP is only for windows if you don't have Chilisoft installed - Yet another invention from Sun Microsystems ;)

You can successfully use FP on Linux servers, but for the majority, the ASP pages FP creates won't work. You can use Access Databases, but you would need to use MySQL rather than MsSQL to connect to the DB.

If they don't say, but they offer ASP - usually windows, if they say PHP only, usually a Nix box.
