Wireless networking and security (WEP) - 4/12/2005 10:22:40
We just got a new ISP, Qwest, and the new actiontec wireless router. Setting up the wireless was simple for no security; however, anyone walking by can get into our network. How do we set up a password to get into the network? Is it as simple as enabling WEP on the router?

Really? We just received like 70 labtops, and all I have to do on them is right click the wireless icon, select scan for available networks, and click mine to connect to.

You shouldn't use Windows to configure the Wireless network, on my setup, I have the Netgear software installed, that allows me to enable WEP from the local machine, rather than on the router. If you enable it on the router it should be fine, but what you have to remember is, most routers give off two signals, one being a dummy network, and the other being a real one.

So, really, all I have to do is enable wep on the router, then, when searching for wireless networks, just put in the name of whatever it is called? Thats all the security it has? (I know its 128 encrypted)

Hi, I have to disagree G, sorry. I would suggest giving the Google resluts a good read over. At the least lock it down to a MAC address. It can be broken into easily but anything is better than leaving it wide open. I would also suggest visting your manufactures web site and verifying the BIOS is current on realese dates. If not update then BIOS. http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=locking+down+wep <edit>http://www.frontpagewebmaster.com/m-262667/tm.htm</edit> Take care, Brian

Ya, i read that article also...kind of scary. Security isn't that much of a concern here, I just dislike the idea that anyone next door with a wireless card can delete our files. Basically, anything but open, and whatever causes the least amount of work to do :) I'll probably just enable WEP and go from there...hopefully that is all I'll really have to do. Then, the user has to enter in the network they have to connect to, correct? If that is the case, I'll make it all funky and that should do the trick :)

You can lock it down by MAC Address in the router config. This is one of the safest I think, because if they can't access your router, they can't add a MAC address to be able to get on the net. Number two, you can use a preshare key or something. Number three, what kind of network are you running where anyone can access company files if they can connect to your wireless. Don't they need to be in your domain and have authority rights. Last, If someone really wants to get in, and they have the knowledge to do it, they will, not matter how much security you have.

Hehe, our network is a joke...I came in about 6 months ago and it is your basic workgroup network with shares and such...its a very small company and they apparantly aren't too worried about security at all; however, I just hate the fact that a wireless notebook next door at the bank can get into our network. The rest they have to have a link into our switch (of course they can hack in anyway fit, but it would be pointless to hack our stuff...nothing worth trying) I just don't really want some young punk deleting files just cause he can.
