Yahoo Local has a beta in which small businesses can have a free 5-page website. Here's the link: http://listings.local.yahoo.com .

I just got through playing around with it, it's live here: http://mi.local.yahoo.biz/suskiwebdesign . Here's a tip, once you publish the site, you can't edit it until it's out of "pending" status. I went back to add graphics, but cannot at this time.

It'll be interesting to see how this evolves.

I have two problems with that.

1. There is usually very little you can do to customise the templates. Some of the companies using this wizard method offer 5 or 6 different versions but if you want to change layout or pictures you can't.

2. I hope you're not using that as your business site. Apart from the ads down the side of the page which isn't very professional,
quote:

Your site will be crafted using universal, accessible design techniques to positively reflect your organization on the Web.

The two pages I checked don't validate at WCAG level 1.

I'm with you in regards to templated sites and freebies. This was just an experiment, and I thought others might be interested in seeing what Yahoo has in beta.

In retrospect, I shouldn't have pasted copy from my own site, http://suskiwebdesign.com, to use with this Yahoo freebie. As I mentioned, I'm currently unable to edit anything on the Yahoo pages because it's considered "pending" by Yahoo. Until it's out of "pending", I'm SOL!

we are, however, moving gradually towards web-in-a-box that will cater to small business owners. before you scoff, think of how far code writing software such as FP has come - programming like Visual Basic moves toward drop and drag code. I behooves anyone who wants to keep a career in web design to move beyond wysiwhg editors and get more knowledgable so you always have a skill

If Yahoo's freebie helps drive traffic to a company's main website, might as well do it! I'm out of "pending" and modified the copy a bit. Graphics will have to wait.
