OK, I admit it, I am ignorant about hardware. However, it has become painfully obvious that I need more RAM. The question is how do I know what kind? I have a run of the mill COMPAQ with an AMD processor. It only has two slots for RAM, so I must get at the least two 512 dimms (they are dimms, aren't they?). Please send some advise my way.

I would first go to http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html and download their audit program to insure you know what motherboard you have. Afterwards, you can go to www.crucial.com and their site will walk you through to get the exact memory you need. You can buy the memory from them (recommended, but costs just a bit more) or go somewhere else to get the memory.

Better Idea - go to http://lavalys.com and download Everest Home Edition (The free one)

When you have that, browse to the screen as shown here. The Memory Bus Properties on the right will tell you what type of RAM you have.

Memory from Crucial is great. Got a link to info on the MoBo? Then i can give the exact amount you can get, and the specs you need to buy to.

Yeah, I've gotten ram from crucial.com many times, and its always worked and been High quality. The only thing that I would mention is that one of my computers is a toshiba laptop, pretty high end, and I've never been able to figure out wether it was a mistake on toshibas part or if crucials system had the wrong information. But when I ordered more ram for it from them I got what crucial said the manufacturers specs were for that laptop. When I got the new ram (2 sticks of pc 2100 512) and went to put them in, I found out that what was actually in the computer was pc 2700. There was no problem as far as compatibility, but what they thought the appropriate speed is was actually slower then what was is the computer. So just make sure you know what the highest speed memory your computer can take is. But, as a plus, when I called them about it they were glad to exchange it for me right away.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Brian and everyone. Crucial.com actually just needed the make and model and it told me what I need. I entered Honda and Accord, then realized it meant the computer. Anyway, I have to think about it. Do I really want to just add RAM or do I "donate" this PC to the kids and get a better one. Hmmm.

Wife just entered room. Quick, everyone hide! Guess I'll just have to get the RAM.

I think making a "donation" is a much better idea.[8D][;)] It's should be obvious to the better half that the children need their own workstation for their homework.

My wife walked in too, I ended up getting RAM. Up to 1GB now, from 512. Seems to help a bit. And, had to get a new graphics card, 256MB ATI 9600 Pro. So, maybe in a couple years I'll get a whole new box.

BeTheBall -> RE: I need more RAM (4/16/2005 21:55:28)

If I didn't have to have so much anti-virus/anti-spyware stuff running, I would probably be fine. My machine has become so sluggish lately. Let me ask you all a few more things. This morning my machine had slowed to a crawl. I launched task manager and it showed something like 116 different processes running. Is that normal? I had installed the new MS spyware utitility and it seemed to be a big memory hog. If I run a virus scan or something of that nature I pretty much have to stop trying to do anything else as the system becomes very slow to respond.

Taz -> RE: I need more RAM (4/16/2005 22:43:14)

I think you should run hijackthis and post results so we can see what is hogging all ya CPU power.

BeTheBall -> RE: I need more RAM (4/16/2005 23:37:53)

Here you go. I'm embarrased to admit that I don't know what 2/3 of that stuff is. Let me know if you see anything that appears out of line.

Giomanach -> RE: I need more RAM (4/17/2005 6:10:01)

Norton [:'(]

Norton is so good at keeping your secure, because it doesn't let you do anything =/

You can get rid of these no probs:

C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe
C:\Program Files\Yahoo!\Messenger\ymsgr_tray.exe
C:\Program Files\Common Files\InstallShield\UpdateService\issch.exe
C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe

Just us msconfig from Start>>Run to do that

Spooky -> RE: I need more RAM (4/17/2005 6:30:23)

If you dont use MySQL all the time, then dont autostart it - just use start > run > when needed

Id also look at removing these (not often used) items

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AdaptecDirectCD] C:\Program Files\Adaptec\Easy CD Creator 5\DirectCD\DirectCD.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SM1BG] C:\WINDOWS\SM1BG.EXE
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [{0228e555-4f9c-4e35-a3ec-b109a192b4c2}] C:\Program Files\Google\Gmail Notifier\G001-1.0.24.0\gnotify.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [iTunesHelper] C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunesHelper.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Share-to-Web Namespace Daemon] C:\Program Files\Hewlett-Packard\HP Share-to-Web\hpgs2wnd.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] C:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.2_06\bin\jusched.exe

BeTheBall -> RE: I need more RAM (4/17/2005 12:24:37)

Thanks for the suggestions. I made the changes and will see how things go over the next few days. Maybe I won't need that extra RAM after all.
