RickP -> 'Web-Safe'!!!??? (4/24/2005 11:33:38)

The subject of so-called 'web-safe' FONTS & COLOURS inevitably is a developing one. I was just wondering if anyone here can offer a 'latest' on these two subjects.

On the subject of FONTS:
I notice that some web discussions/tutorials on the subject offer such fonts as:
Andale Mono
Helvetica
Trebuchet MS
Georgia
among the more usually accepted Times (+Roman), Arial, Courier (+new) & Veranda
Some of these others often listed I don't even have on my own PC which is fairly well-equipped with standard fonts (I thought!)

On the subject of COLOURS:
Although we realise that most surfers now see millions of colours on their monitors some folk still strongly advocate the use of the web-safe few. What advantage is there to sticking to this limitation?

Fonts don't really change. Arial and Times New Roman are still the most common.

Colours, I don't really worry about any more. Most machines now are capable of showing at least paired colours

RickP,

Larry M posted this URL in another thread: http://www.ampsoft.net/webdesign-l/WindowsMacFonts.html

Thanks for link - page wouldn't load though...
Is this a 'latest' on the subject?

Thanks

RickP,

This link: http://www.ampsoft.net/webdesign-l/WindowsMacFonts.html (loads fine for me) relates to and expands on Jaybee's comment re: fonts. As to "web safe" colors, you have all you need from the expert.

RickP -> RE: 'Web-Safe'!!!??? (4/28/2005 5:59:22)

Got there - thanks

Different sites have variants on this. I was wondering if there is an up to date list that gives an estimate of percentages of 'web-safeness' (new word [image]http://www.frontpagewebmaster.com/image/s3.gif[/image]). i.e. roughly how many surfers have Arial, how many have IMPACT etc. in % terms?
Maybe such an estimate would be too difficult to compile accurately (?)

jaybee -> RE: 'Web-Safe'!!!??? (4/28/2005 6:29:54)

I found something recently and I'll try and find it again but Arial and TNR were at 99%. From there, the other standards, Verdana, Trebuchet, Tahoma were somewhat lower. I have to wonder what on earth the 1% without Arial and TNR have got instead. [&:]

[edit] Found it

RickP -> RE: 'Web-Safe'!!!??? (4/28/2005 7:29:21)

Exactly what I was looking for - very interesting - surprised to see Courier New so low down! The one problem with the list is it is a bit out of date now... "© COPYRIGHT 1997-2001   "

Thanks Jaybee

I seem to be getting a reputation as a scary lady.

I'm not, honest. I'm a fluffy bunny really.

RickP -> RE: 'Web-Safe'!!!??? (4/28/2005 16:38:50)

Well, that was what I thought but then I heard the scary reputation so I'm just following the crowd [image]http://www.frontpagewebmaster.com/image/s1.gif[/image]

Here are some current lists that I just found...

Windows: http://www.gammadyne.com/basefonts.htm MAC: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25710 Take care, Brian

RickP -> RE: 'Web-Safe'!!!??? (4/29/2005 13:10:00)

Thanks Brian

Now that also leads to the question of fonts that come with specific common applications - am I right in believing that browsers also come with their own fonts (?) and also MS office - Word perhaps?

Regards, Rick

Reflect -> RE: 'Web-Safe'!!!??? (5/2/2005 11:23:04)

I don't think, could be wrong, that browsers do. However you hit the nail on the head. Most applications will come with fonts that get installed. This is how the base fonts normally grow. The other method is the user installs the font, that in my mind is less occuring over the other means.

Take care,

Brian
