default.html and home.html....pointless? - 4/27/2005 3:32:14
Hi, Is it beneficial for SE's to have the default.html & home.html? As both are usually exactly the same as the index.html. Would having these pages cause a problem with SE positioning and ranking? Thanks F2B

I doubt they would cause an issue. I would say that people who type in your full url (IE youdomain.com/home.html) would be hard to know that you used home.html instead of index.html, however I have noticed that almost nobody every does that. Someone might coming along with a more for sure answer, but I don't see the issue with that.

In a web root it is better to use one and never refer to it. For example: widget.com/index.asp **Always** refer to it as simply widget.com Don't specify the root file. This way, if you decide to change the file extension (like going from a static page to dynamic) the SEs will not have to re-index the page and you won't lose ranking.

I have always worked on the basis that if your index.html page requires a "Welcome to.." then you should have a home.html page. This page would not have the "Welcome to.." as people hitting the home button would not want to see the Welcome bit again. Now, I had a Google page rank of 3 and now it's down to a 2, even though the site actually has much more quality content and backward links. This confused me and got me thinking that maybe having 3 pages virtually identical (default, home and index) is actually being penalised by SE's. The home page has PR of 1, Index has PR of 2. Could they be sharing PR's! So, ditch default and home? I really don't know what do. I think I'm begining to get a bit paranoid...time for beer!

It is always best to not have duplicate content. In my experience the SE's can easily detect and possibly penalize dupe content within the same domain. Don't worry a whole lot about PR unless you're also sliding in the rankings. If you didn't drop in the SERPs - ignore any toolbar PR changes.
