Photoshop compared to pse3 - 4/29/2005 8:04:54
For web design, is there much in the full photoshop version that is not in the latest 'elements' (3)? And... is it possible to download more 'shapes' and other extras for Elements? Thanks, Rick

If elements isn't enough go for paintshop pro - it does just about evrything the full version of ps does - including an excellent batch processor- for about the same price as elements.

Thanks Nigel I'm trying out PSE2 & PSP7 together - I haven't the full measure of either yet and it's hard to choose between them so far. So, are you saying that overall PSP has more features useful to web design?

Does PSE 3 have a significant amount of extras over PSE 2?

Hi Rick, Yes PSP does have more advanced features than PSE but thats is not meant to distract from PSE - I think the menus on PSE are simpler. PaintshopPro is closer to the full blown version of Photoshop in terms of functionality. I know people who use it who can't understand why anyone would pay for the full PS. I've used all of them - PSP, PS and PSE. Both PSP and PS are more advanced but having said that PSE does most of what a lot of folks need. It depends on what you use it for I guess. It's one of those ones where if you use it for a while you'll want more features. Nigel

That's really useful Nigel - thanks Now, what about installing additional extras in PSP - are there places for downloads of extra features?

Here's my take on Photoshop vs. Others. There are many fine photo editing programs and a very popular, full-featured and excellent one is PaintShop Pro. I've tried it but have been using Photoshop for so long, I just can't seem to put in enough time to get the hang of it. Downloaded an earlier trial version of Elements, also. Don't have the time to get the hang of it either, though it would certainly be much easier for me than PSP because I'm a Photoshop user....and after using it all these years I have to say I've hardly scratched the surface of all it's features. Photoshop is the "gold standard" and most pros and photo enthusiasts prefer it for numerous reasons. But it is so expensive that it's outpriced itself for many. Adobe has improved PS Elements so much, and it has many of the features needed for image editing which are found in it's big brother. There is a book called The Hidden Power of Elements, which many rave about, and is said to reveal ways to access several of the most important Photoshop tools — that Elements was said not to have — hidden away in the interface. http://www.hiddenelements.com/ Which program to buy? Your decision; they are all excellent. The only reason to stick with Elements is that if you ever want to get Photoshop, you'll be familiar with the interface and get a bit of a discount for upgrading.

also for the web macromedia fireworks is excellent - arguably better than ps (for web work) as it is more vector based, however it is still quite expensive and its future is hazy with the forthcoming adobe takeover (or whatever it is). however thinking about your questions on printing i would recommend fireworks *only* for web work. Fireworks is not designed for print work - offering no cmyk mode, colour management or ability to deal with very large and high res images.

Can I add a late reccomendation for Corel Photo Paint (just in case anybody else reads the thread). It's IMHO every bit as good as photoshop and if you buy an older version as cheap as PSP. I am amazed that nobody else on these forums seems to use it. quote:
In my opinion, after using many different graphics software applications, including the so called 'leading' graphics applications from competitors, it is Corel's Photo-Paint that wins hands down every time, when one tallies up the 'bang for buck' comparisons. Corel Photo-Paint contains most, if not all of the features of its competitors, plus a great deal more. Moreover, almost every feature is substantially more flexible and powerful, especially when combined with an intuitive and powerful interface that includes Property Bars, Dockers and a completely customizable, exportable interface. You can even customize the workplace LIVE while you work, without the need to navigate complex menu structure. And you don't even need to restart - your customized changes are available immediately!
