Connecting other PC's to ADSL router..HELP! - 4/29/2005 11:53:54
Hi, I have replaced my ADSL modem with a Conceptronic CADSLR4  4 port router. Have managed to get it working on my pc and connects to the internet ok. There are two other pc's that used to connect via my pc. Now that I have the router it means I can reboot, shut down whenever I like without kicking the other two out.  The other 2 pc's won't  connect to the internet via the router.

What settings do I need on the other 2 pc's? Strangely I can ping the pc's from my pc and they can ping the router, but cannot be seen. I think port forwarding needs setting up, but nothing in the manual about it. Public port, private port, port type? I'm stuck on this bit. Would appreciate some help.

Thanks

It depends on which operating system you're running those PC's from.

Basically you would hook each PC to the router, make sure the router is emulating the MAC address of your main machine (check the manual for your particular router for how to get into the control panel)

*make sure you change the Admin password while you're at it...

From then on it's a matter of making sure you adjust the network properties of each machine (in XP Pro you would run the Network settup wizard, create a disk and run it on each machine)

Many variables involved...

Start with what version of Windows each machine is running...

Hi Bobby
All pc's are XP Pro and they work fine when I revert to the ADSL USB Modem then both go to a hub that is connected to my pc. Should I still go through the network setup on the other two? When the two pc's are connected up to the router (and I have already set up the VC's etc from my pc), I can connect to the Internet and I am able to ping both PC's and they can ping the router and me. So, it's nearly there.
What needs to go into the port forwarding? It has:

Public Port - Start  Public Port - End  Private Port  Port Type  Host IP Address

I set one of the pc's up with start 80 and end 80 and the ip address. The other fields?

Thanks

You should be able to do this without getting into the ports...

What I've done in the past is to set up one main computer (the one that the router emulates so the ISP can recognize it)

Then run the Network settup wizard on that computer (as connecting through a "residential gateway" if I remember the verbage correctly)

You set a name for the workgroup, etc (all in the wizard)

At the end it will ask if you want to create a settup wizard for your other machines, it will create a file on a floppy.

You insert the floppy into the other machines and run the netsettup.exe (not sure of name, working from memory here) and in theory it should connect them...

You might need to tweak network settings, but the settup disk should do it all for you.

If you can ping the machines, then they're obviously seeing the network...

I know the last time I did this was on SBC/yahoo DSL and I had to sit with the support tech for about an hour to get their software set up on each machine.

Eventually it worked...

XP Pro should be pretty flawless to set up... either that or you'll never get it to work.

I can't get any Toshiba laptops to connect to our office network, for example... but every other machine has had no problem (including one gateway, two IBM and a sony laptop)

Remember to check your manual to see the order in which you need to disconnect, turn off, reconnect and power up the router and each PC... in some cases you have to do it exactly right the first time in order to get them all talking to each other properly...
