How to create a forum with Frontpage? - 5/1/2005 6:15:28
Hi,

I am preparing a Intranet website at my work place. I want to create a online forum over there such that users can create threads or post messages to existing threads.

Can any one help me in knowing how to do that. Tell me if I can find out a place where I can know all the required information.

Please help me. Thanks in Advance.

Regards,

Prash

Hi Prash, and welcome to OF!

In FP 2003 you can create a discussion web site by going file>new> and choosing the 'Discussion Web Site Wizard' under the 'general' tab. It's pretty basic, but it's okay. I run a phpBB forum alongside my main site (www.phpBB.com)

Hi Womble,

Thanks for your information. Couls you please tell me whether I need Frontpage Server Extension Tool kit for the same? Also, can I host the discussion forums on my Intranet?

Looking forward for your reply!

Prash

Hi Prash,

I recently upgraded from using FP's own forum (not great) to PHPBB, it's a bit of a learning curve if you're new to PHP. However, the PHPBB forum is open source software, free and everything you need to know re installation is on their website. www.phpbb.com. You don't need FP extensions to run it but...

quote:

Installation of phpBB 2.0.14 requires the following:

A webserver or web hosting account running on any major Operating System
A SQL database system, one of:
MySQL (3.22 or higher)
PostgreSQL 7.0.3 or higher (preferably 7.1.x or 7.2.x)
MS SQL Server (7 or 2000) directly or via ODBC
MS Access (2000 or XP) via ODBC
PHP (4.0.3 and above) with support for the database you intend to use above

and see also

http://www.phpbb.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=174911

There's plenty of support on the PHPBB forum

Regards,
Philip

It's also a good idea to familiarize yourself with using an FTP client like http://filezilla.sourceforge.net

Since FP can cause funky things with certain php scripts when you use it to "Publish" the files...

I just dragged and dropped with FP 2003 and had no problems with the script, it works perfectly.
I've heard FP confusticates some types of files but so far so good. Maybe it's just down to dumb luck!!
