Getting 2 domains to point to one site? - 5/3/2005 14:06:33
I have 2 Domins with 2 different FP websites and I would like to get rid of one website but have people who type in that domin be re-directed to the other website which I will keep. I will keep both domains but have only the one website. Please can someone advise? Thanks

Your DNS registrar should be able to point any web site to any IP address. I use GoDaddy and I point 14 domains to 1 specific site and all works well. Their (GoDaddy) implementation just "forwards" 13 domains to the 1 'real' domain. Start with your registrar. That should help.

Or, if you host allows it - you can apply additional Parked Domains to your site. I have two domains pointing towards the same site, without redirections

Relative links won't be an issue but absolutes will be. Redirecting allows you to automatically use just 1 domain in the url and hence no probs with absolutes. Just my observations.

If you add the second domain to IIS as a Host Header, then it will not matter if you have any absolte urls, as the first incoming hit the visitor makes to the site, IIS will answer at that url, because that page (pagenumber47.html) does actually exist at that url (www.domain2.com) and the absolute navigation takes over at that point, and any additional browsing the visitor does from that point on will be using domain1.com address. You see IIS answers the domain call no matter what it is and points to a folder, therfore any pagenumer.html will be available at the domain name that IIS answers for that site and therefore that folder. That means even if you may have a number of links pointing to both domain names you would not lose the traffic from those links. (now the SEO penalty you may incur for duplicate content is a different story and I would never recommend doing this by design) But if you recently purchased domain names, and you say have the dot com and the dot net, or more than one way to spell a domain, I would suggest it from the beginning. I do agree with rdouglass in a way though, if you need to keep an air of transparency on the domain name in the url throughout, then I would also recommend editing the navigation on the site to relative urls.
