Removing Backgrounds - 5/3/2005 18:06:34
this is a great read for anybody interested in learning how to work with layer masks... it's on removing backgrounds from photographs.

It's written for use with The GIMP - www.gimp.org - but the concept applies to all editors... only the names of the tools are changed to protect Intellectual Property :)

This is exactly what I have been searching for, but I wonder can this be done using PSP7??..I really do not need another graphics programme. I have photos of my Birman cats and kittens all done on a navy blue background, and I want to take the background out and just have the cats or kittens, I checked out the Gimp website, and see they used a green background, which maybe easier than my blue as I have so many colour variations on the blue blanket I used and when I use the magic wand it includes some of the darker areas of the cats. I will go shopping tomorrow for a diffetrent coloured blanket, always welcome here in winter anyway so another won't hurt....my cats have lots of them now, they are very spoilt lol.

another way to do it in psp is simply use select tool and switch to either smart edge or point-to-point and select all around the perimeter. setting a feather before you do will make it less crisp around the edges. after you select the perimeter, right click on the blue band at top of the image and select copy. then right click again and select paste..as new image.

Thank You Dan I will try that too...LOL no one would believe the countless hours I have spent trying to find something on this subject, it wasn't till now when I did a search for transparent backgrounds I found this place, and happy I did, as it seems all those dumb questions I had have all the answers already here. Not being computer illiterate didn't help either, I am self taught through sheer stubbornesss to not let this thing get the better of me. It still amazes me how the internet opens up a whole new world to a kiwi from way down under who has never travelled, never been on a plane In fact never even been out of the Mainland LOL and has no real education to speak of!!
