FP and Included Content - 5/4/2005 7:39:19
I am trying to use the included content component in some of my web pages. When I add the coding for this I see it perfectly in Normal, Html, Preview and preview in browser. However when I upload it, it doesn't appear.

The even weirder thing is that I have other included content that DOES appear; just not my left navigation bar.  AND the fact that is was working fine for awhile and then it stopped.  The code is correct.

What the heck can be wrong and how can I fix it?

Thanks!
Heather

Hi Heather and welcome to Outfront.

First thing to check is whether your included content is actually on the server or is it perhaps residing on your HD. Secondly can you explain how you're "uploading" the site, FTP or FP Publish? FTP has been known to cause problems with FP components.

Oh and if you have a link where we might take a look, it would be helpful.:)

Thanks, Mike!

I'm publishing it via FP and the content has been published to the server as well.  (I checked with my host to make sure the extensions were working and they said they were).

The link you can look at is at http://www.resumelines.com/index2.html

I've found a couple people on the web who seems to have had the same problem but I can never find the solution.

Heather what is the exact path to nav.html on your server/site? Oddly I can't open your page at all in Firefox (it opens from my temp files) and when I open it in IE w/o the index2.html IE doesn't recognize the path either.  Once open in IE I can view the page in FP but when I try to view nav.html I can't get to it???? Not sure what's going on.:):):)

I don't know what the heck is wrong with the thing. I just tried to open my regular home page and it says something about downloading a file (which is the first time that has happened!).  If I type in just index.html at the end then it pulls up fine.  I put in the navigation as a temp fix as I try to figure out what's wrong.

Try the nav.html file again.  I had it in the SSI folder (looking in alternatives).  So now it's just http://www.resumelines.com/nav.html
You should be able to get to it that way.  I THINK!

Heather I've been trying, honestly, but I'm just not seeing a solution. The pages aren't working the same at home as they have been at work and either way they're not performing as expected.:):)

So you don't see a solution?  My only choice is to change the navigation on each individual page?  I was hoping you weren't going to say that! :)

I do appreciate you trying to help.  I have to go sulk now.

Don't sulk yet, just because I don't see what's going on doesn't mean squat. Everything "seems" to be the way it's supposed to be but then I don't do websites for a living, I'm a Quality Manager, let's wait until the real pro's have a chance to have a look see.

Hello "real pro's", anybody out there?

I'll see if I can figure this out, or at least try to. Just want to get some clarification on the issue first.

You have a FrontPage website setup, that on the server, has FrontPage Server Extensions installed, and is uploaded using http://resumelines.com and NOT ftp://

Then you have a FrontPage include on one of your pages, and the include is not being shown. However, the include is working on another page.

----- If the above is correct, please do this -----
Basically, we are going to try to see if we can reproduce the same problem on a fresh page.

Create a new page, File > New > Page or Web > Blank Page

Create a table anywhere on the page. In one cell, enter Bobby, on another cell, include the file you are having issues with, but going to Insert > Web Components > Include Page/Content.

Upload the website, and link us to the new page you created that contains the included file.

Also, if you can post code HTML/CODE for the page here, that would be great. I would like to see the new page you created, as well as the page you are having issues with. Be sure to click on the "code" button and place the code inside that.

Apologies for not appearing sooner. My ISP decided to take all their servers off-line to do an upgrade and I've been sat here like a wally all day.

Right it's now gone midnight and I just came in for a quick look before hitting the sack so I'll have a proper look in the morning but two things struck me.

Go look closely at your code.

In index2 you have      <table ;table=""     What is that?

Second, in your nav.html remove all the metas and stuff at the top and the /body /html at the end, then try it.

quote:

<html>

<head>
<meta http-equiv="Content-Language" content="en-us">
<meta name="GENERATOR" content="Microsoft FrontPage 6.0">
<meta name="ProgId" content="FrontPage.Editor.Document">
<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=windows-1252">
<title>Professional</title>
</head>

quote:

</body>

</html>

Oh my gosh!  Jaybee, THANK YOU from the bottom of my heart!  I deleted that code you suggested and it worked!  Just like that!  You don't know how grateful I am!

As for the weird table code, I have no idea what that is. I played with it a little but it changed a whole bunch of things.  Do you think it would hurt to keep it in?

And thanks Mike and Bobby.  I am going to recommend this site to anyone who has issues (like I seem to always do ;))

YOU ARE WONDERFUL!:)

Well it doesn't validate but if it's not hurting the page then leave it rather than hash everything up.

When you're including pages you have to leave off all the usual front and back code that you would have for a normal page. The catch is that FP sticks it in regardless so you need to manually remove it.

Glad you're sorted. :)
