Drive Image has been reccomended to me many times on hardware forums. I would give them a good look!

Powerquest Drive Image is no longer available except second-hand. Symantec took over the company. If you go to http://www.powerquest.com/ and click on Drive Image 7, you are taken to the Norton Ghost page.

We have been using Acronis True Image 7 for a couple of years. But it is a tempermental beast, won't work on some computers irrespective of operating system, yet works like a dream on others. With computers that it won't work on, we use Terabyte Image for Windows http://www.terabyteunlimited.com/imagew.html which is a nifty little utility.

Whoops! It was True Image that was everyone said was better than Ghost lol [8|]

Here is a link to the thread I was reading: http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview.aspx?catid=33&threadid=1467272&enterthread=y

If anyone is planning to get True Image, I suggest you try the demo first and read the support forum:
http://www.wilderssecurity.com/forumdisplay.php?f=65

It is an excellent product - when it works. So don't part with your money till you are sure it works for you.

We had purchased v7 and when we had problems 12 months down the track, support suggested we download the updates for it which we did. But it still didn't work. So then we downloaded the v8 demo and that wouldn't work either. There were very angry rumblings in the forum by other people experiencing similar problems to us.

Back to antivirus - another free version is http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html
Any users recommending it?

Kitka -> RE: ditching Norton AV for AVG (5/16/2005 20:14:28)

I tried Avast! last year for about 6 months on my laptop. It seems good but as I delete all spam directly from the server using MailWasher Pro plus operate behind Zone Alarm Pro and a router firewall most of the time, it is difficult for me to judge how effective it is at detecting virii - I rarely get any.

However, we recommend/install it for people who can't afford/won't pay for a licence for a paid program.

First thing I do though, is turn off the horrible, grating voice that announces loudly when the virus database has been updated [:'(]

- Recommend it for what? Someone that doesn't want to spend money? I think it is good as in better to have than nothing, but I wouldn't recommend that over the major paid AV.

For freebies, Avast and AVG are both good. I wouldn't compare AV freebies to paid AV software though, as there is a pretty big difference between the performance. If you are making a budget machine AVG or Avast would be fine, but if you have $30, I would highly suggest spending it on some paid AV.

I'll do a quick search for the thread I started that has all the info about why paid = better.

For some reason I can't find all the good info I had before, and apparently I didn't post the other tests either :/

Raid is beginning to sound more and more attractive. [&o]

I ran AVG free for several months on my home PC and had zero problems... it's a fabulous option and for most home users I think it's more than adaquate...

I'd be running it here if it weren't for that pesky "not for commercial use" in the EULA

Well yes - a lot of people would choose nothing over spending money.
Providing them with an option makes it that much safer for us all.

bobby -> RE: ditching Norton AV for AVG (5/17/2005 16:30:20)

I'm probably going to run AVG (paid) at home after my Norton expires... I'm really liking the way it works so far at work.  Simply, fast, easy... doesn't hog my system the way Norton does.

The scheduled updates and scans are a lot more efficient and reliable too.  I haven't had it miss one yet, and I barely notice a slow down when it starts before I'm ready...

. . .

and just because it's free doesn't mean it isn't good.  If you want a list of excellent, free software I could post a few suggestions  [;)]
