Discussion Forum Wrong After Publishing! - 5/4/2005 14:12:22
The Frontpage Discussion Web Wizard is no longer creating usable discussion forums for me.  When creating using the wizard, I chose most of the defaults.  It generates the pages and I can view them on my local machine or preview them in a browser.  Looks ok, but after publishing to my web server, I get replicated post and search boxes (4 per screen), and my header and footer titles are gone, replaced with code inside brackets (such as [/_disc1/_disc1/header].  None of the submit buttons work, getting generic "Frontpage Error".  I tried creating a few times, both in subwebs and in the main web.  Results are the same.  Again, all looks ok until I publish, then I open the forum and can't believe what I see...

Any help with this would be GREATLY appreciated.  I'm very frustrated!

It could be a server extension issue... have you asked your host to double check the FPSE's?

A URL for the Discussion page might help.

I've contacted the local web server admin to reinstall FPSE02.  I have deleted the files in question that were created using the discussion web wizard and went in and tried adding another forum from scratch.  This one looks better, but still not quite right.  It says it posts successfully when I submit, but the contents frame on top stays blank.  All I get after the contents header is [_disc4/_disc4/tocproto.htm].

When creating still another, I get the "Server error...FPSE unable to access the file 'service.cnf', please check file permissions".

I'm hoping another reinstall will help.  I've had issues with FPSE for a long time, all related to the discussion forums I've created, all using the wizard.

Hi SArmyTech,

I have honestly only played around with thid myself. I am wondering if you have tried setting this up without frames to see if it will make a difference?

That's actually my plan, once I get beyond this "FPSE/service.cnf" error.  I've gone beyond the dual frameset and am trying different formats to see what works.

Maybe jumping ship altogether and using something more suited for the task could be a logical step?

phpBB forums for example?

It's common for the FP disc group component to get confused when it's not separated out into its own subweb.  Could that be the issue here?

It's best to create the disc web as a separate web and publish it to url.com/subwebname.  FP will tell you there is no web at that location and ask if you want to create one.  Answer "yes."

As mentioned before, I've had several issues with subwebs and FPSE02, so I'm trying to stay away from subwebs and use the main web, even though that does not seem to be recommended.  The web server admin is getting tired of me constantly requesting a FPSE uninstall/reinstall due to the errors I've had accessing the subwebs I've created.  Most of these are "check file permissions" errors and the admin does the reinstall and re-checks permissions, and it might work ok for a day or so, then the same errors reappear after I publish updates.  If I can get past these constant errors, I might go that route and use a subweb to hold the disc web...again.

To answer the question about phpBB forms, our web server isn't set to handle php.  Our sites are hosted locally, to keep costs down.

Well since the Discussion Web is designed to be used as a subweb, maybe the server doesn't offer extension support for subwebs.

If nothing else, maybe you could include the HTML for the initial page. Maybe someone will spot something.

If you server supports ASP, you might look into http://forum.snitz.com/  Free ASP based forum software.

You should not be using the FP disc group component if you cannot use subwebs.

Is this forum for the Salvation Army?  If so I may be able to wangle you a database that you could use for hosting a phpBB forum if you are not going to monster your way through a massive amount of bandwidth and webspace. (:

I was able to use subwebs successfully, at one time.  I created the disc web in a subweb and had it restricted to users I setup under Adminstrator Permissions.  All was well, then it "hit the fan".  Not sure why, but the format of the contents frame was messed up, showing [_disc1/_disc1/tocproto.htm].  I had the web server admin reinstall FPSE02, but the contents frame never went back to normal.  I've tried creating some others, but usually get a "check file permissions" error, either when creating the disc web, or just trying to open the subweb.

Here are some examples from the main web that do not post:
http://www.salvationarmycorrections.org/disc4_frm.htm
Http://www.salvationarmycorrections.org/disc9_frm.htm

My last attempts to access previously created (by me) subwebs give me the error:
Server error: The server extensions were unable to access the file "frontpg.lck". Please check the file permissions.

This error has been appearing for months.  The admin reinstalls FPSE02, same error.  The he deletes the lck file, thinking FPSE02 will recreate, same error.

I am now looking at the asp forum setup mentioned earlier.  I would like to go back to Frontpage, eventually, since I'm somewhat familiar with it.

Thanks for your comment and helpful hints.

Hey SAT,

I looked at the HTML for both Post forms. I don't see anything wrong. Maybe someone will catch something I don't see. It appears you have labeled everything respectively in relation to disc 4 and disc 9 So it looks like it should work. I am also seeing the shtml reference as opposed to the _derived nortbots, which would indicate the extensions are in place. Although the extensions have been reinstalled, and they appear to be in place, I would recommend a test. Sign up for a free space at http://www.netfirms.com/web-hosting-free Create a web, call it dweb (doesn't matter) make sure to install the extensions from the control panel. Wait a few hours to be safe and publish this web. It will simply be a discussion web. This will contain a banner since it is free. If it works, then create a new on dweb2, save it as a subweb of D1 just to see if it will work on their server. If so, then it is a problem with the server, not your efforts.

If this does work, you might try using publish all and attempt publishing your entire web there to see if it makes a diff.

If it works there better, their paid hosting if inexpensive.

Let us know. Sorry it takes me a while to respond, I work 12 - 14 hour days from Th-Mon and am nowhere near a PC.

Thanks to AMysticWeb for the comment below:

If you server supports ASP, you might look into http://forum.snitz.com/  Free ASP based forum software.

The forum went live today, with it restricted to registered users, which was easy to setup as admin.  Great freeware.  No problems testing logins, posting to an Access db, and searching.  I will continue to use Frontpage except when it comes to discussion forums.

Thanks again to all for the helpful guidance!
