FrontPage won't publish - 5/5/2005 1:57:29
Well I am about ready to take a sledge hammer to this computer!:)  I published a web a couple of years ago without much problem.  Now I have built a new website and want to publish it to a new server ace-host.net.  Frontpage extensions are installed.  I open my files>click on publish web>type in http://cuttingout.com and i get a little annoying box saying unable to open.  I have contacted support at acenet.  They want to know my "settings" for FrontPage 2002.  Beats me if I can find any "settings".  I have cleared all the temp files, cookies, etc. from IE and rebooted.  I have tried typing in every address modification I can think of and nothing is getting me past that box of "unable to open.....".  Has anyone else had this problem?  and how did you fix it?  It's 11 pm and I am calling it quits tonight.  Will check this in the morning.  ANY help will be greatly appreciated.

Sounds very strange indeed...

Are you sure the FPSE's are not only installed, but also configured properly?

Is Frontpage identifying your local web files as a Frontpage web?  (In other words, the directory has the little globe icon on it?)

Bobby,
Yes the file has a little globe on it.  I'm not sure what you mean by FPSE's being installed.  The website is very small and not much to it but I wanted to get it uploaded and then go from there.  When I go to type in the publish to site it immediately (I don't even think it tries to access it) gives me the "unable to open ..... server error...possible causes....  I have my installation cd, is there something else I need to install from it?

Dan,
Believe me, I have tried typing everything I can think of in that darn box!  I can access my site control panel from IE with no problem.  I just can't publish to the site from within FrontPage.  No matter what I type in the publish to box, it bleeps immediately.  Acenet has not been much help either.  They keep sending me the same answer over and over.  So much for their tech support.

Ok, now I have a new problem.  Uploaded the site with Core FTP lite.  It's there but it is pretty messed up.  No background on pages, things are moved around, etc.  I have tried to access it via FrontPage but it will not let me in.  Any suggestions?

Just to prove that FP exentsions are properly installed, I would try to open the live site.  File > Open Web > http://www.cuttingout.com > userID/pw > OK.

If that process errors out then the problem is probably with your host.  If not then it could be the way you're opening your local files in FP.

The site should be opened as a web.  File  > Open Web (Site in FP 2003) > Use Look-in dropdown box to navigate to and open the folder containing your local web > Open.

If that was the issue then it would be a good idea to click "options > publish all files..." when you go to publish with FP.  That will make sure that all of the files you need to move will get moved.

Also, as a word of caution, you should not attempt to use a third party FTP program to upload to your Front Page web as it will in all probability corrupt the FP Extensions.  If you have the option on your server to re-set the FP Extensions, I would do that first.

Hey Big T,
I am so frustrated, it is hard to get past this.  Ok, I have the site up.  I had to load it via CoreFTP.  The problem is the pages are not right.  I tried to open the website in FrontPage - of course no luck.  I just keep getting the same cannot open site box.  I have checked, the extensions are there.  Acenet says they are working fine.  Not sure how they know since I can't access the website via FrontPage.  I think I would just like to DELETE the entire site and figure something else out.  Maybe use a different program.  That is a little frustrating since this was not a cheap program to start with.  I tried to delete the site files via CoreFTP but they are still there.  So now I don't have a clue as to what to do.  If I take the time to redesign the pages in FrontPage there is no guarantee they will be any better than what I am experiencing now, correct?  I am pretty sure the problem is on the server end, but they just don't seem to care if I get this resolved or not.

Sorry Big T I meant Big O,
Well it was too late.  I had already used the other program.  I am trying to work with Acenet and just delete the whole site.  But, I want to be able to publish with FrontPage not CoreFTP.  Haven't had a reply from them yet.  I have used my FrontPage program before.  Should I upgrade to 03 instead of 02?  Is that my problem?  I am two steps away from canceling the service and going somewhere else.

Not so.  MS used to recommend against the mixing of FTP and FP because it used to be that FP could not recognize files added to a site via FTP.  This opened the door for version conflict issues for people who didn't know that.

I know people who have been happily mixing FP and FTP since 1998 without a single file corruption issue.

Good to know that Thomas.  Might be something you would want to put in your news letter because I am sure there are others who are not aware of this.

RE: FrontPage won't publish - 5/5/2005 20:45:00
I just finished browsing the Microsoft Site on 3rd party FTP vs FP Publish and this is what they had to say regarding this matter:

quote:

The FTP process communicates with an FTP server program running on the host
site.  It sends and receives packets of information with (potentially) a
handshake between the client and the server after each packet.  The FTP
server program running on the server knows nothing about the website or its
needs.  It only knows how to send and receive packets of information.

The http process communicates with the webserver on the host site.  The
webserver knows about your website, and can do more than simply send and
receive packets of information.  In the case of FP, this host webserver is
part of the FP server extensions.  As you send and receive packets from your
client system to the host FP webserver, the packets of information are
changed as requested by the client (i.e., FrontPage) to enable certain
functions on the page.  This is why your local page's code view, and your
published page's code view will reveal different code sets.

By using FTP on a site with FP server extensions enabled, you put or remove
files to or from the site without the 'knowledge' of the FP server
extensions.  This can cause considerable problems to the functionality of
your site - and is said to "break" the server extensions (when in fact all
it does is to get the SE out of synch with the site).  Whatever you call it,
the site is now broken.  You can fix this by reloading the Server
extensions.

This quote was taken from the Microsoft Discussion Forum dated 3-15-05 so it is not something that is outdated and Microsoft seems to think that using FTP to load your site will cause problems.

I tried using an FTP and it messed up some of my pages.  Took out all the backgrounds, moved some things, etc.  The host site deleted everything so I could start at the beginning again.  FrontPage just will not let me go to the server.  I have looked hi and low in settings, made changes, pretty much exhausted everything I can think of.  If anyone has any ideas, I am open to trying whatever it takes.  I would upgrade to FrontPage 03, but who knows if that will fix anything.

I dont think that upgrading to FP2003 would have any affect on the problem you are having.  Did your host re-set the Front Page Server Extensions for you?  I think that is your first step to make sure they have done that.   Also, can you give us the exact error message that you are getting......the whole thing, not just "wont open"

The problem with using FTP is that FP uses some hidden files and folders for things like themes, shared borders, and the FP nav component.  FTP does not automatically know what all needs to be moved.  FP does.
