Okay, so not all of us use them, but often times a client will request one... so how do you go about creating a favorites icon?

Here's a free utility that will do it from any .png graphic...

http://www.winterdrache.de/freeware/png2ico/

It's command line only, so no point and click, you'll have to do some typing... but really, how hard is it to follow these simple instructions (after creating the PNG image)?

Download png2ico-win-2002-12-08.zip
Extract / Un-zip it
Move png2ico directory to C:\
Move your .png graphic to the png2ico directory
Open command prompt (Start > Program Files > Accessories in Windows)
type the following, in order, without the quotes:
"cd c:\png2ico"
"png2ico favicon.ico filename.png"
   (where "filename.png" is the name of your graphic file)

Now you've created the .ico (Icon file)

Upload favicon.ico to your root web directory

Finally, add the following two tags to your <head>

<link rel="icon" href="favicon.ico" type="image/x-icon">
<link rel="shortcut icon" href="favicon.ico" type="image/x-icon">

I played around and created a very simple (read: not very good yet) favicon for my father-in-laws racing site:
www.flammangracing.com

It's a little red 91 against black background... in case you couldn't make it out, LOL

<edit>
I've only tried this at 16x16 px - not sure how or if it works for resizing an image...
It also does not appear to work in IE for some strange reason..?

HellsBells -> RE: creating a favicon.ico (5/6/2005 9:59:50)

Here's another utility - no typing involved!

http://www.html-kit.com/e/favicon.cgi

Used this several times - really easy.

Taz -> RE: creating a favicon.ico (5/6/2005 10:10:02)

/just creates a .gif and renames it .ico [:-]

They do work in IE, however it's a royal PITA arse getting them working so not really worth bothering with.
(Involves deleting favourites, rebooting, readding the favourite, rebooting again, turning around 3 times and praying at the sun, then hopping about on the left foot 55 times, followed by hopping on the other foot 77 times.  That kinda routine we all love IE so much for.)
Anyone daft enough to be using IE can live without them anyhoo. [8D]

Alzo, every time you clear IE history, all your favicons go [sm=bye.gif]

Why does anyone use IE, I mean really?

Donkey -> RE: creating a favicon.ico (5/6/2005 12:08:33)

Because they think it's the "official" windows browser and they are afraid to try one of newfangled ones in case they damage the computer.

Taz -> RE: creating a favicon.ico (5/6/2005 14:15:57)

When in actuality they are helping their p00ter by not using IE and keeping it safe. [:)]

(Oh no, here he goes with his IE thingy again!)

Why does 92% of the world use IE?  'Cause 92% of the world doesn't want to be bothered working on their PC.  Hey, 99% of car owners don't change their own oil; why would they change the engine?

I know some folks here love to hammer on IE because of the holes.  Well, computer users wanted all those "features" (ActiveX, etc.) and don't really care about the rest until their PC stops working.  IE is attacked because of the 92% market saturation.

If FF had 92% market saturation, they too would be the big target.  And please don't start in about how secure other platforms are; they're NOT.  Period.  There is no truly secure OS or browser except the ones that are disconnected and locked up in a closet.  Someone will always be able to find a hole somewhere.

Also please note; I hold no alliances or favoritisms towards IE.  I have favoritisms towards my clients.  And as long as my clients primarily use IE, then that's what I'll focus on.

You cannot change the users with simply a better product.  Look at the old VHS vs. Beta conflict.  Sony had a far better product with Beta tapes.  Can you even buy them today?  Nope.  Why not?  They were a superior product.  It's that VHS flooded the market and Sony never took 'em seriously  Hey, when at least 25% of users switch to another browser (or at least my targets do) then I'll consider switching as well.

Also, I've been using IE as my primary browser for many years and have not once, repeat not once, been subject to exploits or viruses.  Most folks I know today that have been hit had done things like open up that "our_secret.zip" file sent to them by their brother-in-law, downloaded some cool toolbar, or surfed porn sites (or something to that effect).  Smart (read safe) computing and keeping up to date on patches go a long way.  That part is no different in the FF (or other browser world).

</soapbox>

Phillips had them beat both hands down with the reversible cassettes, those were ace, 8 hour tapes looooong before Long Play video players had even been invented.  Yet they also bit the dust.  Shame really.

My post about why people use it (IE) wasn't serious at all, but interesting response. [:)]

LMAO, nahhh, I never troll, well only on special occassions and never somewhere like here.

Because they're ignorant.

They either don't know that they should look at another option, or don't even realize that they could.

I can't wait to see what happens when Longhorn EU ships without IE embeded.

TODDMAN -> RE: creating a favicon.ico (5/12/2005 14:43:54)

This is what I do for some one needing a favicon. A simple DIY.
1) Ask them for a simple graphic, such as the smiles.
2) Re-size to 16 x 16 pixels and convert to bitmap in your favorite photo editor and save as favicon.bmp
3) Open up your file in your file manager and change the extenison from favicon.bmp to favicon.ico
4) Insert into your images folder (I put mine in the root) & follow "Bobby's" instructions on 5/5/2005.

NEXT SUBJECT: I love Firefox, BUT thanks to the gapping hole & the fix didn't come out till today, no browser is safe! According to recent news reports, Firefox is now being attack by websites just as much as IE. I tell all my clients, if your going to surf using XP, setup a user account (no admin privy's), this way if they do pick something up it doesn't install & mess with the registry, it's stuck in the temp folder.
Oh well, if all else fails Start > Run > C:/format this

MAN I LOVE THIS SPELL CHECKRE, THANKS OUTFRONT!!![:D]

I've tried Linux, but do to my handicap, windows since win98 has a program called "Sticky keys & mouse keys" which I need in order to operate the computer, the Linux distros that I tried in the past didn't offer any such support. Seeing how I can only hit one key at a time & this simple response would take some one 1-2 minutes to type, takes me 5-10 minutes.

Hint: If `ur mouse quits, turn on "mouse keys" till u get a new one[X(]

bobby -> RE: creating a favicon.ico (5/12/2005 15:47:15)

I'm not sure which you've tried, but some do offer a variant... in SUSE Linux, for example:

Click System > Personal Settings > Accessibility.

Under Gnome desktops on most distros, you can try any or all of the following:
http://www.gnome.org/~shaunm/access-guide/dtconfig-11.html

[;)]

Still may not be up to what you're used to tho...

Shirley -> RE: creating a favicon.ico (5/12/2005 15:48:44)

I use Irfanview to create my favicon.ico files
http://www.irfanview.com/

bobby -> RE: creating a favicon.ico (5/12/2005 15:50:15)

Shirley, nifty... thanks for the tip.

Ive used ifranview before, but not for .ico files...

Thanks, don't remeber where I found it, but it's called h2g2buddyicona.gif, you can always right click or Google it!

ajdevies -> RE: creating a favicon.ico (5/12/2005 22:06:40)

This is a simple icon editor program - for free.

http://ranfo.com/iconedit.html

I also have a discontinued program called "iconvert" which converts 32 x 32 px bitmaps to icons.  It was created by Rosemary West, whose site is http://www.rosemarywest.com.  Her archives are closed, but the program may still be available somewhere else on her site.  Sorry I don't have time to research it in more detail - big presentation due tomorrow, and I'm wasting time as usual.

Other half had to do that last night. He had a trojan we just couldn't get rid of. Tried everything (including Hi-jack This) every time it looked like we'd got rid of it, on reboot it came back. So complete wipe and start again.

All set up, anti-virus on, firewalls running, various spyware and adware detectors on, two monitors running and he goes online with IE to his work site which doesn't work in Firefox. Within 5 minutes he had two more Trojans and a dialler.

Man I hate IE! [:@]

It's not IE, it's how his computer is setup. When you re-format a hard drive that's infected, you need to remember to delete the MBR (Master boot record) other wise the infection is still their. If you surf or doing work in general on an XP computer setup up 2 logons, 1 for admin (this is for updates) the 2nd logon is "user" the privy's are the lowest. You still can work in frontpage, dreamweaver, photoshop & so on, what this does it allows the person to continue with their work without having to worry about something or someone installing a program or changing the regisrty. It's really quite simple, from your control panel setup a new account & it should give you an option Admin or User, choose User. this way you can turn off spy / adware they just it up memory, unless your blessed with 1gig.
