Want opinions on my Auction site. - 5/8/2005 6:56:49

I have been working on this asp. Site for almost two years now. I would like to know what other asp programmers and or web page authors thought of it. All criticism welcome.

Thank you for your time.

Just a quick response.  I've only looked at your home page.

I think the image behind the white text makes it difficult to read in places.  Also I would get someone to proofread the site for you.  The English is not good in places e.g. "some how" instead of "somehow", "there" instead of "their".  Also you use the words "some how" twice in one sentence.

er, honestly?
blinking text is annoying - perfer bold and/or different colour, also the blink tag is deprecated (earmarked for removal from future versions of html)
my personal opinion - i don't need today's date on this kind of site (or any kind of site except maybe a news site) i have calendar/date/time on my computer/watch/wall/...
"Brows" is traditionally with an 'e' on the end ;)

the colour scheme is awful. and the logo makes me think holidays in the sun or - worse - timeshare. try and pick a dominant colour that promotes a feeling of trust (a nice shade of blue say) and keep the sheme faily monotone with some highlights of the colours or shades/tints from the logo.

all the gradients look very busy )blue and yellow/orange always make a dirty transition from one to the other.

underline things that are hyperlinks - nothing else.

remove the lines between the "Eclipse is FREE Free!" etc as the links being underlined look cramped with the dividing lines as well.

split your text up into paragraphs - with either indented first lines or preferably the default html ('double') spacing between.

text is too hard to read in places.

masthead/banner is antialiased (so the text has a smooth transition to its background. the graphic style overall is dated and would be better kept simple and clean.

too many font styles going on - use one for the body and one for everything else

speeling and gramma is awfull.

" Left verticle nav utilizes textual hyperlinks." what's this got to do with anything.

leaving the homepage for another section suddenlt throws me into a frames and a different navigation look! why?

the footer would be ideally placed at the bottom of the whole page not on the left and preferably with the right year (i.e. yearstarted-2005)

no alt tags on the images - makes them inaccessible to those browsing without graphics and disabled users.

maybe the service yor offering is a good one but if i was looking at your site as a potential customer i would be straight out of there as i wouldn't trust a site that looked like this. :(

so a pretty clear thumbs down from me but i hope you might take some of the advice in how to make it look better. if it was my site i would swallow my pride and start again. keep it clear and simple and let the message come through loud and clear about the quality of your service and why i should use yor site.
:)

I have to agree with Dave & Donkey, especially on the graphics and grammar.  I can't stand poor grammar!    The graphics need to have a smoother feel.  I understand that you want to look different than your competitor auction site - but you can also learn from that site.

Most successful, top ranking business sites follow the KISS rule:  Keep it Simple, Stupid.  If you look at Amazon.com, and eBay, and other TOP merchant sites, you'll find they have two things in common:  elegant, clean looking graphics, and very simple schemes.

I tend to become uncomfortable on sites where there is a "lot" visually going on...and I don't think that's unique to just me.  One local newspaper site drove me batty because it was the craziest, godawfulest collection of jagged graphics, busy and loud backgrounds, and just all around tackiness.  I only went to the site to try and find the obituaries.  lol.  Imagine my shock one day when they had traded that site in for a template - yes, it did look like most other newspaper sites with just a different masthead, but it didn't give me a headache looking at it, and I go back now to read it several times a week.

I think you'll be much more successful if you tone it down a bit...use the color sparingly (perhaps use that funky gradient just at the top, or as a divider bar or something...I like the gradient, but not such a large dose of it.)
