I'd recommend one of these two:
SimplyMepis 3.3 at http://www.mepis.org/
or Ubuntu Linux 5.4 at http://www.ubuntulinux.org/
Both are incredibly easy to set up, and Ubuntu in particular is the fastest growing Linux distro in history, popularity wise... it already tops the charts at Distrowatch
Mepis Linux comes as a "Live" CD that also has a very handy "Install" icon right on the desktop, so you can download, try and install if you like.
Ubuntu has a Live CD option, or an install option... but not both in one handy package (though you can probably install from the Live CD with the right set of instructions)
Ubuntu on the other hand will also send you a CD completely free of charge (including S/H) from http://shipit.ubuntulinux.org/
Both are Debian based, both are top notch distributions. Both take less than 30 minutes to install (on a 500MHz P-III). Under 20 mins on a 2 GHz P4. And most importantly, both simply WORK
If you're on broadband then Internet won't even take much to set up... dial up can be tricky on Linux, but both handle it pretty well (unless you're on AO-Hell, then don't even try)
The primary difference between the two, if you really want to know, is two-fold.
First, SimplyMepis relies on a fairly modified Linux kernel... Ubuntu stays more true to the Debian base. Second, Mepis uses a KDE desktop by default, Ubuntu uses Gnome. (if that makes no sense to you at all, don't worry... completely unnecessary to grasp at this stage of the game)
If you feel like trying a more "commercial" flavor (something more Win-like in appearance) try out Xandros 3.0.1
