Anyone know of a good, preferrably free, application for sending faxes over a cable connection?

Andy from Somerset -> RE: I need a fax application (5/9/2005 18:22:45)

Windows XP? Not sure about the 'good' but it should work

you can send faxes with xp?

Spooky -> RE: I need a fax application (5/9/2005 19:37:24)

Yep, search Windows help for XP, you can install a fax driver (and use that instead of printing)

With the WinXP fax service you need to connect via a phone line don't you? Unless maybe if you are doing VoIP?

Duane, I looked for one before and didn't find any free ones that send. There are quite a few that recieve for free, like k7.net. Maybe you will have better luck since this was a year or so ago.

Ahh - sorry, missed the cable bit :-)

bobby -> RE: I need a fax application (5/9/2005 20:50:14)

Fax should be an option in your "send to" menu...

Right click, send to: Fax recipient

Also I think you can fax directly from some office applications, but I'm not sure..

It is an option, but then it wants to dial up via modem, which I don't have. [&o]

I'm on adsl, but when I built my new computer I included a cheap internal modem (in a PCI slot), specifically for the very rare occasions I need to use fax, or as backup for when adsl goes down (also rare). I think the card cost me less than AU$20, and obviously doesn't take up any deskspace or get dusty. I think in US they are $10-$13. Might be a solution to consider.

Otherwise there are Internet fax services, but I don't know how private or secure they are.

Aha, that might be a problem since you'll need a phone line to use a fax application of any kind...

You might want to look into something like efax ( http://home.efax.com/s/r/gen-efax-plus5?VID=33675&CMP=KNC-33675eFax1 )

I haven't used it in about 5 years... back then it was free for a number that was long distance to your area... $20 per month for a local line.

Not sure what the rates are these days...

Kitka, great idea. I have a an old 56k external fax/modem laying around and never even thought about using it. I use K7.net for incoming and can use this for the rare outgoing needs. Thanks![:)]

I use the one that comes with OutLook. Works great for me.

"need phone line to fax"

Does that mean that all those people that are going VOIP on broadband and had given up their land phone line are unable to send a fax to a fax machine?

Kitka -> RE: I need a fax application (5/11/2005 0:49:45)

There is an extensive list of Internet fax services here:

This might be an option too:

No, but you would likely still need to hook a phone line into a modem (even if it's going thru your VOIP account)

... just like a telephone does...

But when you give up your land phone line your land phone line is dead.

Well ... there's good and there's free. :)

We offer good internet fax services (i.e. easy to use and reliable).

There are free options such as faxzero.com. Obviously, working for an Internet fax company - I'm not a regular user of their service. :)

I use RapidFax and it works great through my cable connection. It costs $7.95/mo. (I just noticed that they went up to $9.95/mo) You can get a free 30 day trial. www.rapidfax.com
