Donkey -> Outlook Problem (5/12/2005 7:18:35)

Just suddenly yesterday one of our machines lost the ability to send email via Outlook. Today I have the same problem (2 out of 3 on the network). This only happens on our .co.uk addresses; they still receive mail OK, and I can send email through outlook using a .tv address that seems to be unaffected.

I have checked the settings and they are all OK, my ISP confirms that there is no problem on the server, and I can send web-mail so I assume that he's right.

I have tried deleting the mail accounts and reinstalling them, tried rebooting, and I'm about to uninstall outlook and reinstall it.

Thunderbird is not an option because it is not suitable for multiple email addresses, and I can't synchronise my phone address book with it. (Anyway I'm using thunderbird at home on a long term test and to be honest it is no where near as good as outlook).

My virus and adware/spyware defenses are active and up to date and I am behind a mechanical and also a software firewall. Nevertheless I shall run a couple of on-line virus checkers later as well.

Any ideas of what it could be? Is there something obvious that I haven't thought of?

What error message are you getting when you try to send e-mails on the affected accounts?

Not necessarily. I've been having probs for two days with one of my accounts as well. I could send but not receive. Eventually had to log in via the web to check it all. Sent a support message to my host and half an hour later, all working again.

Getting odd messages from Gmail as well on download, suddenly screaming for proxy which it never had a problem with before. Add to that all the AOL problems and I think something wierd is going on.

[edit] I now think it is the ISPs mail server. As soon as the account downloaded, the gmail message went away as well.

Do you have Norton AV, IS or the like?

I had something similar last week on Thunderbird - just after a Norton IS live update. Switched Norton off and all the e-mails appeared - switched it back on again and everything seems fine. I've got the automatic e-mail scanning switched off after a previous problem with receiving e-mails.

Also - just found this:

PCCillin auto updates everyday. I'll try turning it off and see what happens.
Also I had a windows auto update recently (W2K Premium edition) could that be the culprit?

Donkey -> RE: Outlook Problem (5/12/2005 7:50:23)

Nope, made no difference.

Tailslide -> RE: Outlook Problem (5/12/2005 7:51:52)

No impossible - Microsoft are never responsible for any failures or errors.

(where are my pills....?)

Hi Donkey

Have a look at this:
trendmicro.com/solutions/search/main/search/solutionDetail.asp?

with special attention to the POP3trap.exe bit. If you've had a recent update from MS maybe it overwrote whatever PCcillin had in there.

Donkey -> RE: Outlook Problem (5/12/2005 9:17:17)

Thanks Tailslide

I though that was it, but we have pc cillin 2002, not 2000. I've checked as they advise and it is working OK.

I will go off-forum for a while and run a couple of on-line scans to see if I am infected with anything.

bobburk -> RE: Outlook ExpressProblem (5/13/2005 6:47:11)

I am experiencing a similar problem with my Outlet Express. When I compose and send an email, it remains in my Outbox and sends again every time my computer automatically checks for new email (every 5 minutes). So before I realized this was happening, I was sending the same emails dozens of times. As Microsoft suggests, I erased my outbox and let the program automatically reinstall it the next time It starts. If that doesnt solve the problem, Microsoft suggests doing the same thing to all the boxes but that is more involved so I haven't done that yet. You have to copy the contents of the boxes first if you don't want to loose all the emails that are in there. That didn't solve the problem. Any ideas?

Bob B.

Email Microsoft. You might not get a reply but it'll make you feel better. [:D]

Donkey -> RE: Outlook ExpressProblem (5/13/2005 9:57:35)

Well now I know what the problem is it's bloody british telecom.

Still not sorted yet though.

After uninstalling and reinstalling outlook, running two on-line virus scans, I became totally p***sed off with the whole thing and decided to pay someone to come and sort it out. About 4 hours ago I telephoned our friendly neighbourhood computer expert Dave. He said "it's BT, they are fixing their servers so that only recognised domain names can send email to stop spammers. You just need to phone them ask for the broadband technical department and they will give you a new user name and password for the domain. I've had about a hundred phonecalls from customers this week on the same subject."

Several phonecalls later, the first two BT engineers did not have a clue what I was talking about and tried to take me through the bloody set up process over and over again like I was the idiot!, I got to someone who knew what to do. There is of course a complication - because our website and email are hosted on an old BT Connect dial up account (which we never use because we have a broadband account as well) They can't authenticate the domain name for broadband so I need to cancel the old account and transfer the domain to the broadband account. Which has to be done in stages and it seems will take about a week. After much unnecessary confrontational behaviour on my part they are now looking into expediting the process. I am not holding my breath.

Needless to say we will be moving away from BT at the earliest convenient point. It is difficult but by comparison they make NTL look like a caring, customer focused company.

Donkey -> RE: Outlook ExpressProblem (5/13/2005 12:01:43)

Update.
A Bt engineer just called back, sadly I was on another line and he left a message on the voicemail. It took me half an hour to get to the front of the queue. Then although I had the reference number from the first guy, the moron on the other end of the line needed me to explain everything over again. Then he tells me that the real problem is with their SMTP servers and they are trying to sort it out so will I please bear with them. When I ask why this information is not on the status page of their website or the telephone statusline I am told "we are not sure but we are looking into it".

I have now given up. This is like pushing custard uphill with a feather.

Tailslide -> RE: Outlook ExpressProblem (5/13/2005 12:23:40)

There's nothing like good customer service and this is nothing like....

Don't think NTL are much better - same s**t, different colour.

I know a lot of people say that, but I've used NTL broadband at home for about 2 years now and after I have navigated through the automatic telephone answering minefield they have solved any small problems quickly and efficiently. Their service never seems to be down either (unlike BT). Perhaps I'm tempting fate saying this on Friday 13th.

It's probably just that NTL's Indian call centre is marginally better than BT's.

Tailslide -> RE: Outlook ExpressProblem (5/13/2005 13:02:19)

Actually I have to say that whenever I've had a problem with the Cable TV they've sorted it out very quickly.

Broadband has been more of an issue for me. Quite often in the last few months the e-mail server has gone down and when I check on the NTL site's status page it says "planned outage". I'm not sure who planned it but it certainly wasn't me!
I think that all of these companies are as good or bad as each other - they rely on the fact that there's a revolving door effect of customers leaving > going elsewhere > getting annoyed there > going elsewhere > and eventually back to the starting company.

Historically NTL has been a debt-ridden company and so they didn't used to invest alot in staff which is why you could never get through to people. With the proposed merger with Telewest maybe that'll improve...
