Using images as links - s.e.o. query! - 5/14/2005 7:58:07
I have noticed that pages on a site that are only linked TO from an image link (as opposed to a text link) are not showing up in Google or other search engines.

Do SE spiders not like image links for the purpose in indexing pages?

Another thought/question...

The particular pages are all in their own separate directories and are all the index.htm pages in these directories. My links are set to reference the directory only (i.e. href="../artist/artistname/"  I have not added /INDEX.HTM) - could this affect SE indexing?

Thanks

No. They work fine. It must be something else.

No.  Refering to the directory root is the prefered method.

I read somewhere (probably on outfront) that when using image links you need to make the alt tag relevant to the link destination.  Could that be the problem?

Thanks Mojo

I didn't think that these should be a cause of non-indexing but I can't see any other reason at present!? And it is very consistent about the particular pages that are not indexed!!!??? Shall wait and see what happens.

how do you make the alt tag "relevant" to the linked page?
unless you mean using the href in it? I've never heard of this?

I mean putting the linked page title in the alt tag, not just a description of the image.

For instance
alt="Arkwright's amazing small widget page - image shows a small grey widget "

I may have got this wrong so don't regard it as gospel, but it wouldn't hurt to try it and see.

My alt tags on these linked images already do that really. The link is to a particular atists' page (their name forming the directory name) and my Alt tags just repeat the persons name. Hmm, maybe Google has only part indexed the site so far and perhaps will pick up these other pages next time round - we shall see!? Thanks for the thoughts though.

Donkey - that's one of the uses for the title attribute. so it would be
alt="small grey widget"  title="(link to) Arkwright's amazing small widget page"

not *so* sure whether you need to put 'link' in the title as it is obvious it's a link...

Thanks Dave, do you know if that makes the link more "search engine friendly"?

I can't see how anything in either the alt or title tags would help s.e. indexing unless it is a direct use of the href!? But, maybe there's something to it but I just haven't heard of it. (?)

if the links are to pages within your site..or even to pages with similar content, both alt and title provide the opportunity to emphasize keywords/content. lets say your site is about art and you are linking to another artist...title="link to scottsmith - an artist who also does watercolors" would help if your page content discussed "art" and watercolor".  make sense?

of course you shouldn't stuff your alt tags (or title tags) with keywords that aren't relevant to that particular image as users with screen readers will have to listen to it all ;)

Sure - I understand about good use of alt + title tags for some reasonable keyword opportunities but I still can't see any way that they will help a page that they hyperlink to get found by robots

It won't help them get "found". It will help in ranking and PR though.

Take care,

Brian

In my opinion, I'd have a duplicate set of text only links down the bottom of the page to ensure that if people are looking at the site without images they can still navigate - AND I'd have a sitemap - that way Search Engines couldn't fail to find your other pages.

if you have the right text in alt attributes then you don't need duplicate links: the alt text will be displayed. a site map is a good idea though!

Yes, sitemap a good idea to be sure but I was interested to see if these pages would be picked up just from the image links.

On another site I once noticed that pages only linked to from image links weren't indexed - I wasn't sure if the problem was the image links or the fact that on that occassion I had used JS with the links to open up set sized windows ???

Bots can't follow JS links.

Take care,

Brian
