_vti_bin folder missing on Front page site - 5/16/2005 2:54:08
Does anyone know why the _vti_bin folder would be missing on my remote site and on my local machine too? What actually is this folder and what is in it. I was told my form may not be working too because this folder is missing from the site. I published the site and also made sure show all hidden files and folders was checked under settings. However, the _vti_bin folder is missing? Any clues or suggestions? I want to scream because this form is driving me crazy. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Your host ought to be willing to repair your form for you. "vti" stands for "Vermeer Technologies Incorporated." That's the company who created FP and sold it to Microsoft. The _vti folders hold the config files that make up FrontPage server extensions. The only way I know for one of these folders to get deleted would be for someone to go in and delete it manually. I do not think that FP would delete it from the server if you had accidentally deleted it from your local site, but that seems to the the only reasonable explanation for how both versions of the site would be missing that folder. These folders are hidden meaning that it's possible that they are actually where they are supposed to be. The way to know for sure is to open Windows Explorere. Then do Tools > Folder Options > View > Under "Hidden files and folders," check "Show hidden files and folders." Then use Windows Explorer to locate and open your local web folder. I think it's possible that your _vti folders will show up there. If so then your host is just struggling to understand FrontPage. If not then I would have the host reinstall FP server extensions. When you go to publish after that be sure to answer "no" if FP asks if you want to delete any files or folders on the server. t

Ok, I don't know how I would have deleted the folder though because the hide files and folder option was checked when I went under the Tools > Folder Options > View >. I unchecked it and the folder is still not there. So I dumbfounded.

Rian, I went ahead an removed the double post. Just wanted to include the information in the other post, in case you haven't fixed your issue. In the future, there is no reason to post the same question twice, most users here that check the beginning forum, will also pay attention to the advanced forum. Posted by Nigel quote:
Have a look in windows explorer with 'show hidden folders' checked in folder options. At least this way you can check if it exists in your site. have you published the site via frontpage publish yet? Posted by RianAshley quote:
Hi, Nigel, thanks. I have done this and the folder is not showing up so something is definitely wrong. But I can't figure it out. I did publish the site and can't see the folder on the remote server either. So I think I am going try to import the web into Dreamweaver and go from there. Thomas Brunt also informed me too that SSL doesn't work with Front page server extensions and the form has SSL so I think I just won't be able to use Frontpage for the site then. Goodluck!

You won't see the _vti folders in FP. You will have to use Windows Explorer with the settings I mentioned above to see those folders. You would not be able to open your local web folder as a FP site if they were not there. t
