I don't like installing backup software on my computer, I always seemed a bit iffy about it working/causing issues.

I have Nero6, so I can rip my cds/dvds and put them on my computer in an iso format. I use this for my common programs like XP Pro, MS Office, and Macromedia DW/Flash. Then all the self installers are kept in their own folder as well. I think my programs folder is about 10GB in space.

After that, I have the Outlook Express Backup Utility, that creates a backup of my OE. I have this saved to the My Documents folder.

Then I have all of my folders nicely organized, and simply do a copy/paste of the My Docs folder, and paste it into my backup drive. It takes around 1.5 hours to copy all 45-50GB of data.

If my main drive crashes (which is supposed to last for around 135 years) I can boot from my backup drive, that has a windows partition, a linux partition, and then a 3rd partition for my backups.

While I wait for the new drive to come in, I will be up and running fine! Of course if you really care, you can always do a Raid1 to ensure all data is kept together.

I never install crapware that contains those programs with bundled software (latest version of Napster was the only thing I have installed). My system stays clean, and with a 2 minte run of AdAware SE Personal and Spybot S&D, the only things that are picked up, are bad cookies.

The entire idea of having a backup utility scares me.

My way takes a little getting used to, but the way I do backups seems to work great for me.

No, I use the Iomega backup utility that came with my external USB. It's OK, does running backups while I'm working.

It gives you the option of keeping multiple versions of your files but I found that nearly strangled the machine so now I just keep the one and it's fine.
