Help! My Computer Crashed - 5/19/2005 8:26:29
Hello all:

I am terrified because my computer has crashed. I am not sure what I need to do, but before I tried to take it to someone to look at I wanted to see if you all could offer any suggestions on how to fix the problem myself.

I went to turn my PC on yesterday and I received the following error message on start up.
"Disk Boot Error. Please insert System Disk."

So I decided to grab my Windows XP disk, and restarted the computer with the disk in the CD drive. The set up screen came up.

I went through the following steps.

1. I tried to install on the existent partition....It went through the setup process, told me that the computer would reboot and set up would continue on restart......it restarted and nothing...it went back to the same thing over again. So then I proceeded to try something else.

2. I deleted the existent partition and formatted a new one. Tried to install XP on the new partition. It went through the setup process, told me that the computer would reboot and set up would continue on restart......it restarted and nothing...it went back to the same thing over again.

3. I tried to repair the program, but I think I am not MS Dos literate enough to complete that.

Any help you can give me would be wonderful.

Thanks
BobbyDouglas

Have you tried another hard drive? And did you make sure your hard drive was connected properly?

I can't even access my hard drives. Everything is corrected properly. The PC won't even boot up. If I don't have the XP disk in then it reads "Boot Disk Error" if I put the XP disk in and then turn the computer on, it goes into set up mode. But it never sets up. I think I am doing something wrong

- I meant a different hard drive so you can see if the drive you have now is what is causing the issue. Take out your current drive, and try a different one to see if you have the same problem.

In other words - either try another HD that has windows installed or a new drive that you can install windows on (with the boot disk).
If you arent sure how to remove and install a hard drive, try and grab someone who can.

Reboot and see if it loads off the new HD (if it does your old one has obviously failed)

I know this is probably a really daft question but just to make sure we've covered all the bases.....

You have made sure you haven't got a floppy in the drive?

You'd be amazed how many hard drive failure calls I get where a forgotten floppy is the culprit.
