Save page and pictures into same folder - 5/20/2005 12:30:20
Hi,
I'm using Filezilla to download my pages (to D:/My Web sites) before editing them with FP 2002, and then uploading the new versions to my website through Filezilla.

I used to save updated pages locally, and FP automatically used to put all new pictures in the page (including thumbnails) in the D:/MY Web sites folder. ..  This was fine.

But now, for some reason, the pictures stay in the folders from where I took them (for example, the picture stay in D:/My pictures), making it difficult to upload together with the page through my FTP software (I have to swing from one folder to another to catch all the pictures).

I beleive that there is a register key that should be modified to make FP save the page and its pictures in the same "My Website" folder, but I d'ont know what to do ..
Maybe someone can help ?
Many thanks !
Larry M.

zonda,

A recipe for certain disaster. When working with FrontPage, all files associated with a particular site should be located in one root directory (My Web sites folder/my FP website), called-up and worked on in FrontPage locally then published, not FTP'd, to your host server. Similarly, host server files should always be published down, not "downloaded".

Thank you for your response.
Using an FTP software has worked well so far, and doesn't seem to raise any issue.

It's just that FP 2002 does not save images in the same local directory as the pages. I hope that I find how to fine tune FP to do this right.

Thank you for trying to solve the problem, anyway.

ftp'ing your original pages down may have worked but, if your site uses front page extensions, we have seen lots of instances where ftp "up" to the server has "broken" them.  Larry is right - safest is to use fp's publish function- it does a good job of coordinating what has and hasnt changed.

Just a stab in the dark - but I wonder if the folder you are FTPing to has been created as a FrontPage "Web" or is just a normal folder. If FP doesn't detect the folder to be a FP Web, it behaves differently.

You can tell if it is a FP Web or not by viewing it in Windows Explorer. If the icon has a globe symbol on it, it is a proper FP web. If it is plain like any other folder - you might have found your problem.
