Incoming link popularity from Google - 5/21/2005 7:49:07
Hi all

I'm new to SEO so please bear with me...

If I do a Google search for link:www.eslbase.com, Google tells me I have no links back to my site.

I know for a fact that I have several (not many, but only just getting started...). Yahoo tells me I have some, as does MSN etc. All of the sites linking back to me have some kind of Google page rank. I've definitely been spidered by Google.

Am I missing something? Why doesn't Google recognise the backlinks?

Thanks in advance, kt

Hi KT

Anything to do with Google is always subject to conspiracy theories/lastest opinions/wild guesses and gossip so anything you see or hear about Google that hasn't come from their homepages should be viewed as opinions rather than facts.

Anyway, that said - the latest "guesses" about Google's fiendish algorithms are that:

a. It operates a "Sandbox" for new sites and for new links - this means it doesn't list the new sites immediately or list the new links immediately - it waits a while to see if they are still there or if they have disappeared.

b. It likes incoming links alright, but only if they appear relevant - i.e. they come from a site that has a relevance for your site - not much good if you're a web designer!

All of these ideas seem to stem from the view that Google is trying to do away with the advantage that having your site SEOd might give you - e.g. massive list of links from link farms etc. There seems to be a strong suspicion that if a site appears to have been SEO'd then Google will penalise it. Obviously this is a problem for those who optimise their own sites properly - but who knows what the truth is frankly.

I'd say if the links are fairly new then wait a few weeks and see if they are recognised by Google. If not then maybe look at the text in the link from the other site - maybe the title tag in the link could help. It's all guess work I'm afraid.

For the sake of PR and nothing else (backlinks) Google does not care if this site is themed or the same genre.

For the sake of ranking for an authoritative site yes genre specific links will help out.

Also last I heard Google only displays backlins that are PR4 or higher when doing a link: query.

Take care,

Brian

If that is true, it explains a lot that I have been puzzling over for a couple of years! :)

I'ts not *all* guesswork. Also, I am one of those that does not believe in the sandbox. I believe there are many filters in place and both SEO'd and non-SEO'd sites can trigger those filters and find themselves out of the SERPs.

If you want to find your back links - use Yahoo -- linkdomain:yourdomain.com

I show 111 results on Google using ::www.eslbase.com

I show 44 results on Google using   eslbase.com -site:www.eslbase.com

IMO, Google has been using smoke and mirrors to trick/screw webmasters for quite some time. The toolbar PR is one of those tricks.

I agree - Google loves that people get themselves worked into a frenzy about the whole thing. They say things at various conferences that are deliberately ambiguous and then watch the panic ripple out.

There's not much point in trying to pin down exactly what they're up to anyway 'cos they'll just change the algorithm and you're back to square one. All you can do is code as well as possible and have good content.

Really what we need is competition for Google - reduce the monopoly.

Yup, been this way for at least three years.

Take care,

Thanks everyone for all the input. I guess I'll keep on getting links and trying to optimise with good content.
