Can You Review My Site Please - 5/21/2005 11:06:23
Can someone give me some usability testing on my website?

I want to know if it is user friendly. I've been working on it so much that I think I lost my way somewhere..

Thanks

You need to get a valid doc type before you do anything - then it'd be easier to judge.

Edit:

Then get it validated at the W3C.

You may need to do some optimising somewhere there too as the page takes 80 seconds to download on a 56kbps modem...

V cool site! I too had problems with the nav menu though. I don't know if it's because it's too small, or just with the font style, but otherwise it's great!

You need to get it working in FF, check it in Opera - then worry about IE afterwards. FF and Opera tend to interpret code correctly whereas IE tends not to. In Opera you've got the same small menu plus the main contents doesn't extend down to the bottom of the page.

To aid with this you need a valid doc type - probably HTML 4.01 transitional. Then get it validated at the W3C. This gives you an excellent basis to work out any problems in the sizing etc. It also helps to ensure that other browsers and platforms might interpret the site correctly. In case you don't have a MAC this site emulates what your site would look like on various Mac platforms fundisom.com/g5/

If you can eliminate code problems from your site then hopefully any flash problems will be easier to straighten out.

Also see what you can do about optimising graphics - would you wait a minute and a half for a site to download?

I like the colours - very evocative (ooh there's a nice word!)

I was using IE6 yesterday when I looked at it. Just tried it in FF and I see what mean about the nav menu - that's waaay small in FF!

Also, I've also just noted that the 'home' button on your nav is at the bottom of the list which isn't where I was expecting it to be - rather at the top of the list. Also, the 'look around' text, which I was expecting to be a link to somewhere as the 'classifieds' and 'evil id lookup' are links, doesn't do anything, and neither do the plain text links at the bottom of the page.

Finally, just one teeny tiny question. What is evilbar, what's it about? (or am I being dim and missing something here?)

That said, it's still cool, and the style reminds me of one of one of my haunts of college days long, long ago. Ah, fond memories....

Thanks for the replys... I tried the doc type and it messed up my FPDRW stuff in mozilla.. Im still working on that.

I did fix the flash sizing issue though. I had some parameters set that firefox did not like. It all works good now though.. Thanks for all the help...

I love this place

Womble.....

Thanks for pointing out all that stuff!! The help is greatly appreciated.

What is Evilbar?

The name Evilbar is the name we are going to call our bar in Chicago when we open it up. Hopefully soon.... Plus it is a catchy name for a website of this nature.

My girlfriend and I wanted to create a website that would allow people to:

1) Classifieds: Look for people they used to party with, grew up with, dated ...ETC without charging them like classmates.com, ussearch.com or the myriad of other dating like services

2) Cards: Allow people to meet others while maintaining anonymity , hence the business cards you can print out.

3) Reviews: Read reviews about clubs, bars or restaurants that we visit every weekend in the Chicago area. With hopes of having users send in reviews to us so we can post them for anywhere in the us or others.

The website has a go live date of June 3rd, 05. We are still working on finishing up the classifieds section ( we are open to opinions ).
We are currently in discussions with screenprint shops to have our Evilbar ladies sexy tank tops made before the go live date.

:)

Later...

Rich

menu works great now :)

you need to put some way of turning off the music!!! i was just listening to some music and opened your site to check the mene and found no way to turn off the music so 'turned off' your site instead. i'm not averse to music on websites but seeing as i'm nearly always listening to music anyway then i would appreciate a way of turning it off and on ;)

I'll second that! I spent a couple of minutes looking for a way to turn it off when I visited yesterday, then left because I couldn't stand it. It conflicted badly with the music I was playing and overwhelmed it. :)

It is usually best to make music optional. Imagine doing a bit of surreptitious web surfing while at work in a shared or open plan office and landing on your site ... sprung instantly!

I took a peek the other day and was going to reply and say I found it too dark to make out, but you seem to have brightened it up. I can see it fine now.

I'll third the off-switch for the music. I'll also add a request for a non-Flash navigation option. I run software that disables Flash because I find it too distracting, but many sites you can't get into without it (which is why I have it installed at all). My point is that not everyone runs Flash, so you should provide an alternative method of navigation. Without it, there's no way to link to other pages on your site or even know that you have other pages at all.

Other than that, it looks like a very cool site! I love the artwork. Good luck with it!
